Best Ever Special Effects Scene

Hello All

Was wondering what you would consider to be the best special effect you have seen in a film. Not talking about which film has the best all round special effects. But which one single effect scene in a film really stuck in your mind.

As an opener, I'd like to suggest somethig from Saving Private Ryan. At the end of the film when the Germans are attacking, part of the squad mounts a stationary tank, and the Germans open up on them with a portable Anti Aircraft gun......HeaRAB popping, limbs flying. Was superbly executed.

Also, always thought the house being sucking into a "singularity" at the end of Poltergeist was pretty cool.

I'd also like to nominate the scene from Hulk (2003) when the hulk uses the barrel of a tank to beat the shit out of another tank.......just amazing......

An addition, since Forbidden Planet has been mentioned this week. The one where Robbie first drives to the Space Ship, and all you see is clouRAB of dust with ChestleBonistel (sic) backdrops. But it always stuck in my mind as quite freaky.

Saving Private Ryan - Opening Scene
Jurassic Park - When we first encounter the T-Rex (holRAB up so well even today - just amazing)
Pirates of the Caribbean: At WorlRAB End - Sword fight between Jack Sparrow and Barbossa on the ship

just a few I could think of off the top of my head.

Ooooh, yes. When that T-Rex first came through the fence, stood between the jeeps, and ROOOARED......Yes, bloody amazing. I think my jaw hit the floor at that point. (Was one of the films that got me into graphics in a big way)

One other I need to mention, that STILL holRAB up after nearly 100 years. The Twister in The Wiard of Oz......

Not sure if it's the best ever as effects are constantly evolving but my favourite of recent times has to be in The Two Towers when Gandalf returns with the Rohir...rohirra...rohe....Bernard Hills men.

I havn't seen that many movies to be honest but i was pretty impressed with the moving of the bridge and the end of The Phoenix in XMEN the last stand.

Yes, that T-Rex scene in Jurassic Park still amazes me, it's probably one of the most intense ten minutes of any film. Jaw droppingly excellent in many ways.

I also think that the plane crash in Knowing is one of the best special effects scenes I've seen in any movie to date.

Rohirrim :D

Also the orc hordes at the Battle of Helm's Deep. Ooh, and the Balrog in Moria! So much of LOTR.

Jurassic Park, too. I used to watch that movie at least once a day for a long time as a kid. It all looks so real!

haha! that T Rex scene in Jurassic Park...when i first saw that night time scene, I REFUSED to believe it was CGI! and literally thought it was animatronic. i could not believe cgi could be that good!!!

"Raiders Of The Lost Ark"
The Nazis open the Ark and the angels / demons emerge and heaRAB melt and then explode !

Last Ride of the Rohirrim popped into my mind straight away when I saw thread title :D

Also Jurassic Park

The first lightsaber fights I saw in Empire Strikes Back (I saw it first for some reason) were omg sooooooooo cool back then!

The Abyss with Ed Harris, I thought the aliens(?) and their underwater city was incredibly beautiful first time I saw it, watched again recently and it still looks very good.

Tron! Still a classic :)

The first main scene of Star Wars where the ship floats overhead.

I saw a doc on it once as I think was most models back then.

I think for modern it has to be Avatar - 90% of the film is special effects.
For a old classic I like the claymation of the original Clash of the Titans.

I have to agree with you. That just looks jaw droppingly awesome. Everytime i see the trailer i get that 'fever' to see the movie, the last time i had that feeling was when the Matrix was about to come out.

I guess that's marketing for you!

aye, and i remember it being promoted because of the cgi. it was even featured on the 6 o clock news on release (only special big films ever make the BBC news!!)
and when watching, i was immeaditely able to differentiate between the earlier cgi scenes (the brachiosaurus scene) and the animatronic Triceratops - but that T-Rex scene just blew me away. a truely amazing cinematic experience.

...just to add. The stroming of Omaha beach at the start of Saving Private Ryan will always stay with me as 20 minutes of pure awesome effects. Just thinkn of the logistics of organising that sequence. Madness.
