Best ending to a film of all time *spoilers*

The end of Gossip is fantastic. I just didn't see that twist coming. If anyone hasn't seen it, it is worth it just for that.

The Blazing Saddles end is pretty good, though a bit surreal, similar to the Holy Grail ending.

I generally like endings where you feel that you have just watched an episode of someones life, and they are going to carry on from there. I have been known to sit there wondering what they are doing now :o .

Mostly already mentioned...

  • The Usual Suspects (Biggest twist - M. Night Shymalywatsit could learn a thing or two)
  • Some Like it Hot (Funniest last line ever)
  • The Blair Witch Project (But, no, he's..., but, he, no  )

But also...

  • Stargate (Coolest ending EVER)
  • Star Wars III ([CONFESSION]I haven't blubbed like that since, well, never. End of my childhood, I say, end of my childhood [/CONFESSION]) :o

Star Wars
Jaws
Shawshank Redemption
Capricorn One
The Wild Bunch
Aliens
Apocalypse Now!
The Fog (cool ending nomination!)
The Blues Brothers
The French Connection
Duel
Once Upon a time in the West
The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Reservoir Dogs

I have to say, I've always wondered why more people didn't get that one. I twigged when they went to a funeral wake for that little girl and no-one acknowledged him. I felt a bit stupid it had taken me that long, tbh.

My favourite ending: Brighton Rock, 40's British gangster film with Richard Attemborough playing Pinky:

Earlier on in the film, Pinky has made frienRAB with a local girl, primarily as a way out of a sticky situation and with the intention of using her at some later date. The girl, however, falls in love with him, and becomes very clingy and needy. At a funfair, the girl implores Pinky to go into a 'Make-a-record' booth and record something for her. He goes in, puts his money in the slot and speaks into the microphone: "You've asked me to make this record, so here goes. You think I love you. Well, I don't, I hate you, I hate everything about you..." and so on.

At the end of the film, after Pinky has come to a grisly end, the girl packs up his things ready to give them to the local orphanage, and finRAB the record. She asks the sister to play it for her, and you think that she's about to discover Pinky's true feelings and be heartbroken. But the record jumps and stops on the worRAB "I love you" playing them over and over again. Fade out. Great ending.

I think Titanics ending is very good. After all those people dieing and then Jack dieing it enRAB on a really nice not where she is reunited with her love.

The last scene of "SeconRAB" was very disturbing.
"Dead Of Night" had a strange end, you're back at the beginning!
"Duel In The Sun" very violent,
"The Killing" a terrific end.
Four good oldies.

The Usual Suspects is amazing, Night of the Living Dead (original) is incredible and Donnie Darko always gets me.

Also, I watched Blair Witch abroad without having seen any publicity or hype, so left the cinema shaking!

But the one that completely blew me away was Saw.

Mine are a mixed bunch, most already mentioned like Se7en, Shawshank and Donny Darko, but the latest that sticks in my mind is Constantine, I would have been most disapointed if he had gone up!

On Her Majesty's Secret Service; a shock if you haven't read the book and a couple of minutes of screen time which disproves the myth that George Lazenby was hopeless.

Some Like It Hot, obviously.

North By Northwest (read William Goldman's analysis of the ending in Adventures In The Screentrade)

The Italian Job.

The Sound of Music - always brings a lump to the throat.

Carousel (ditto; not as effective as the stage original, but pretty effective nonetheless)

My Fair Lady (God, I've just realised I am SO gay...)

King Kong (the original)
