Best ending to a film of all time *spoilers*

Looking for stuff a little different. I'm well aware that the end of Spartacus is iconic, and the end of Life of Brian is genius paradoy, but maybe something a little different. Heaven forbid a good modern film?? ;)

Off the back of finding out there was three endings to The Butterfly Effect last night. I'd seen the directors cut where Ashton Kutcher goes back in the old grainy movie, and chokes himself in the womb, but my bias in music made me love the theatrical ending I saw last night.

Evan (Ashton Kutcher) sacrifices his love for Kayleigh (Amy Smart) by going back to the memory of first meeting her as children, and scaring her away so that Kayleigh never became part of his life, and she grew up happy and successful-though now they never knew each other. Pretty basic, but the ending is where 'Stop Crying your Heart out' starts to play in the background, as they pass each other in the street, stop and look at each other. And as she walks away, he turns and follows her, and end.

Difficult to explain really, because it sounRAB s**t written down, but anyone who's seen it will know what I mean. Good film, topped off with a brilliant ending, perfect music, quality acting and slightly creepy to boot. :D

arlington road was a pretty average film, but the denouement was fantastic.

best ending ever has to be the original dutch version of the vanishing.

beat me to it - birdy is one of my favourite films ever.

"One of my favourite film endings belongs to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. From the outset, a bullet-ridden ending appears inevitable, but writer William Goldman (whose script won a best screenplay Oscar) and director George Roy Hill craft their tragic finale so deftly that death seems like a triumph. As the scene freezes and the sound continues, and we realise this time Paul Newman's Butch and Robert Redford's Sundance won't be making yet another of their improbable getaways, they are immortalised."

..... and the real Butch and Sundance lived on well into the 20th Century .....

I must admit, I loved The Butterfly Effect, one of the best films I have ever seen.

I think the best film endings for me are: Grease, Shawshank Redemption and Dirty Dancing.

Also, the girly part of me loves the end of Dumbo and The Little Mermaid (sorry).

For me it is the Sixth Sense. Got to the end of that and it was just a case of "Woooooaaaahhhhh!" - very, very clever.

Seven is the only film I've been in a cinema for that had people cheering the conclusion.

As a previous poster mentioned, Terminator 3 has a really cool, clever ending, which really surprised me.... shame about the previous 100 minutes!

Loved the ending of Lock Stock where it finishes with a shot of him reaching over the side of the bridge with the phone in his mouth trying to grab the guns, so your never totally sure if the other guys managed to get through to him or not.

End of Se7en is a classic too.

Twist endings do it for me, even though we've come to expect them these days.
Films in the late sixties and early Seventies had great downbeat endings which seem to be coming back into fashion (The Descent for example).
For example Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry where you think they've outrun the cops and suddenly the car crashes into a train and the film enRAB. Or Electra Glide in Blue where the traffic cop you've come to like throughout the whole movie is gunned down by some hippies at the end unexpectedly.
Also there's The Sixth Sense (even if you predicted it, it's good), Carrie (hand shooting from the grave) and The Usual Suspects which probably has the best to date to my mind.

Have too agree but the whole film is genius from start to finish, if i've had a really bad day and have no reason to laugh i just stick Holy Grail on and watch the scene with the black knight!!

T2 isn't without its merits, but I feel it is only good as an ending because the film itself is better. T3 as an ending picks up an average film, whereas the ending to T2 is consistent with great film.

Basically, I would agree that T2 is the better ending, but T3 achieves more in the context of the film, as it manages to create interest in a future film conclusion, despite the lacklustre effort which has preceded it. The ending to T2 didn't need to do that.

HE WAS KILLED IN LIKE THE FIRST SCENE!! AND SPENT THE REST OF THE MOVIE CONVERSING WITH ONE PERSON, WHO 'SEE'S DEAD PEOPLE...'!!!

Phew, got that out my system. ;)

Guna have to go with True Romance...The massive Shoot out not the romantic bit at the end. Or maybe Kill Bill Vol 2 just for that 5 step heart stopping thing

I've only seen the first but haven't seen the second, so have no idea to the answer to this question...

Does Alex (Devon Sawa's character) get killed at the end of FD1, because I always thought it was only Carter who got killed, yet Alex isn't in FD2?!?!?!

Favourite ending: Donnie Darko! Really confusing the first time round but on a second viewing it starts to become a bit clearer and a lot sadder,
especially as you know he'll never meet his girlfriend
