Best Disney Films?

Old enough :o I actually just think they are the best crafted stories. I love all Disney films and I have them all (apart from limited edition ones). I also love The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmations, The Sword In The Stone, Sleeping Beauty,The Rescuers, Basil the Great Mouse Detective, Mulan, Robin Hood etc - but the ones I mentioned, I just find the animation beautiful on (especially Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King). They also have the best songs.

My favourites:

Sleeping Beauty
The Little Mermaid
Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast
Lady & the Tramp
Cinderella
Hercules
Pocahontas
The Emperor's New Groove
The Lion King
The Great Mouse Detective
The Rescuers
Robin Hood
The Jungle Book
The Aristocats

Quite a few there, but I love most of the pre-00s Disney movies. For live action, I love Song of the South and Mary Poppins the most. Not a huge Pixar fan but I do like the Toy Story films.

As far as my choices go, as with cunningham1471 I find it quite difficult to narrow it down.

If we're talking in terms of actual animation then I think Bambi is absolutely timeless, and still looks gorgeous to this very day. The realistic and fluid animation of the deer and other animals must have looked amazing at the time, and the breakthroughs they achieved with incorporating real life special effects in the film such as smoke and water, multiplane shots and the enormous palette of colours generated were recycled in many other Disney films since. This film really did set the benchmark for animation, but it also had a mature enough story to suit all audiences and the idea of an unseen enemy makes Bambi worthy of a one-of-its-kind horror movie status. :o

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty are amongst Disney's best fairytale efforts. The Jungle Book has the best comical and musical value, although I think The Aristocats is an underrated comic gem.

A few films of the so-called Disney 'Rennaissance' were a bit mediocre IMO, namely Pocahontas, The Rescuers Down Under, Mulan and The Little Mermaid. Aladdin wouldn't have been as good if not for Robin Williams's inclusion and The Lion King is good and looks stunning, although in a glossy way.

I think Beauty and the Beast is my ultimate favourite, because it had the perfect "formula" that Disney films generally aim for and they ended up with a film that managed to be entirely enchanting, romantic, scary, uplifting, funny and sad throughout the duration. Two strong lead characters, good animation, only one excellent use of CGI, great music, great voice cast, one of Disney's best antagonists and generally a great realization of a fairytale that was difficult to tackle and put across to their typical audience. Just how I went from feeling scared by the Beast in his first presence (I was six years old) to shedding tears when he gets heartbroken or when he died is testament to how well they handled it.

Live action would have to be Mary Poppins. Favourite Pixar film is Toy Story 2, with honourable mentions to WALL-E and Up.

In summary, my three favourites are:

1. Beauty and the Beast
2. Toy Story 2
3. Bambi

I liked Pocahontas, it had some lovely music in it. Colours of the Wind was a really beautiful song and often made me cry.:( Even now it still does. But it was a nice movie though.

Apart from the dodgy middle period, I still love Disney films (except The Little Mermaid, which I loathe). Picking the best is so subjective, but..

From the 'Golden Age' - Snow White is still complete genius. Although I have a bit of a soft spot for Fantasia.

SInce they got their act together - Aladdin (alhough I also loved Hunchback, which got very dark)

Live action: Mary Poppins (not Bedknobs & bloomin' Broomsticks)

But then Pixar haven't made a bad film yet. And how do you choose between The Incredibles, Toy Story (1,2 or 3), Up, Monsters Inc, Wall-E, Finding Nemo for the best one

Disney were very committed to Pocahontas in the early stages until they noticed that The Lion King could potentially be a bigger hit. But given the choice, with all the historical importance and legacy attached to it, I think I know which film I'd rather they concentrated on.

I think Pocahontas is beautiful and doesn't get enough credit. Maybe people didn't like it because it took such great liberties with the history? But, then, this is Disney. I'm not sure what people were expecting.

Colours of the Wind is one of my all time favourite Disney songs. The lyrics are simply gorgeous.

Agreed, my fav of all time! It comes out soon on DVD. I like the Toy Story films too, great quality. My 4yr old nephew watched Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs the other day, he couldn't stop laughing at Dopey. Still makes kiRAB laugh after all this time. :D I like the little-known Oliver and Company and 101 Dalmations too, my late Dad's fav.

In my first year of secondary school we had a school choir and I remember singing Colours of the Wind and also A Star Is Born from Hercules. Don't remember any other Disney songs though but we sung those songs well. :)

My thoughts:

The lead characters were weak
The voice acting was poor
Devoid of humour
Historically inaccurate

It also appears to have less critical acclaim than the other Disney films of its time.

Colours of the Wind is lovely though, I agree.
