Best Decade for Action Movies, the 80's...

Watching Gremlins on TV now and for me the 80s produced the best action movies. Though my taste is rather action orientated.

Ghostbusters
Return of the Jedi
Rocky 4
Back the the Future
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Aliens
Blade Runner
Die Hard
The Terminator

I have lost count of the amount of times I have watched some of these movies but movies of today, I find it difficult to sit through one sitting as most are two hours of CGI.

8 of the best there Barry. You say 'action' and indeed these films contain some of the best examples. Seems to me also you're a bit of a genre geek too, good on you!

80's were great but don't forget the early 90's. Some of the best action films were made then as well with Van Damme, Arnie, Stallone, Willis, Lundgren, Seagal etc all chipping in. But from the 80's there's also Predator and Rambo. :)

I'm looking forward to The Expendables. Will hopefully be an action movie to remember amongst all the rubbish that gets churned out nowadays.

The Expendables looks like it's going to be pretty good.

Stallone, Jet Li, Staham, Lundgren.

I thought the action movies that were released this year were pretty awful, Transformers 2 deserves a mention as one of the worst action flicks I have ever seen.

You had the holy trinity of Schwarznegger, Willis and Stallone in the 80's. They weren't actors just pure screen presence. Willis could act a bit, but the other two would just bust through the doors kick some ass and leave after cracking a one liner!

Pure Joy!

Movies such as Die Hard 4 and Bad Boys II underline what is wrong with action movies thesedays - they don't know when to stop.Insane amount of CGI,PG 13 suitible, relentless explosions etc. Then there is the ADD shaky camera work and pounding soundtrack. It's the more is more approach, but it just makes you forget most of what you have seen. The actors struggle to give a memorable performance also, probably due to competing with relentless action.

No wonder Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were so well received - they got the forumla just right, but added enough SFX to compete with the overkill movies made by the likes of Michael Bay.

80's was a great decade for cinema. Some of my faves.

Blade Runner
Commando
Die Hard
E.T.
Empire Strikes Back
First Blood
Ghostbusters
Gremlins

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Labyrinth
Police Academy
Police Story

The Terminator
The Thing
Transformers the Movie

I agree entirely - the potential of organic/'in camera' effects reached its creative zenith in the 80s. I can't relate to the 'feel' of today's effects, because I know there's nothing 'real' about them, and subsequently action sequences just leave me cold.
