Best Carrier for Phone as Modem

I do a lot of RV travel and I'm not usually in the EV-DO / 3G type areas close to cities and large population centers.

I really need to use my cell phone to check emails, weather updates, etc.. My father has a really old verizon phone he still can plug into his laptop with some really clunky old piece of software that allows him to use his phone as a modem. It's quirky but it works and he doesnt' pay for a data plan of any kind.

I have a PPC-6700 but I have to buy a data plan to use it as a modem. I wouldn't mind paying for it but I only need it for 2-3 months a year and they require a 2 year contract to enable it. I really want to turn it on for 3 months, then turn it off until the next summer, then I would be happy to pay.

So who is the best carrier for phone as a modem? Considering i would like to use it intermittantly, i'm not usually in the higher speed areas, and i don't mind paying extra if i can pay extra for a couple months at a time.

The best carrier for use as a modem is the one which provides the best service where you will be using it. So that being said, you should look at where you will use the phone and see who has the best coverage, and then pick the phone which meets your needs as a modem.

Well that's the thing. We go on an extended RV trip every year, about 6-8 weeks. Last year we were out west, this year we'll be down south. Who knows next year. Then we take the occassional extended weekend trips in fall and spring.

So basically someone with good broad coverate (like Verizon w/ their voice service) and 90% of the time in rural areas, not large metro areas.
