Best car chase in a movie...

I agree with everyone who has said the Blues Brothers.

The movie-long chase to getaway from the police, the state troopers, the army, the Nazis, a disgruntled country & western band, an angry bar owner and a demented ex-fianc
 
That was pretty funny, especially the back alley with the small bumps.

The last time I saw that cop he was Mr Drysdale in the Beverley Hillbillies.
 
Now you're talking my language...used to be obsessed with car chase movies as a kid, and still like a decent chase even now.

Glad to see some little known classics mentioned, like Blazing Magnum, The Hidden, The Seven Ups etc. I also have an affection for the original Gone in
60 seconRAB...actually a pretty ropey movie but a great chase sequence.


Gotta love those older, non-cgi enhanced car chases where stuff was done for real.

I'm not sure I could choose just one...but the Mad Max 2 climax would probably be pretty close. A very realistic and dangerous looking chase, with a really crazy bunch of stuntmen.

I also really like To Live and Die in LA...because it incorporates plot into the action sequence and adRAB and interesting dimension to the chase - who is chasing them and why?
 
There's a scene in which the Michael Douglas character is following Sharon Stone's character down a twisted mountain road, weaving in and out of traffic etc. I'm pretty sure it's in Basic Instinct.
 
The Bourne trilogy have great chases, but Ronin got there first for that type of ultra-realism. The Blues Brothers is the all time classic for me, though.

"Hi, this is car fifty five.... we're in a truck!"
 
We have a winner. The fact the car chase is 40 minutes long and was filmed in downtown LA with 99% of the public in the shot not knowing they were being filmed is something that could never be done today.
