Best Buy NOT stocking Gurren Lagann part 2 DVDs

This is really, really bad. I went there today looking for it, and I was told that this item would only be available from their online store, as well as CG R1 Part 3.

WTH is going on with these DVRAB.. Best buy has a huge aniem section but won`t stock GL? This is baaaad.

Best Buy is probably still trying to clear the glut of anime that their brick'n'mortars still have in stock. Or at least, the store you went to might be.

I know my nearest one has made some...odd choices at times at what to put on the shelves.

My Wal-Mart carries Inuyasha, Naruto, DBZ, Bleach, and just added Shin-Chan (!) to their lineup, while we're bringing up local Wal-Marts.

Best Buy cutting back on Bandai products feels kinda eerie because I've pretty much purchased Bandai series only from Best Buy.

Best Buy to Discontinue Anime Sales In Stores, Moving Sales OnlineWritten by Huraberto Saabedra on January 16, 2009Anime, DVD, Funimation, Geneon, Industry, RetailAnimeNews.biz can confirm that Best Buy will discontinue sales of anime titles across the entire Best Buy store chain by Fall of this year, with sales of titles from distributors moving to its online storefront as reports had picked up momentum in recent weeks that the company was conducting massive stock pulls and contractions of its anime sections, with some stores eliminating the section altogether depending on the size of the store and market.
Retail sales of anime have always been a mixed bag for distributors and retailers, as specialty retailers such as MusicLand have been falling by the wayside due to slowing sales of CRAB, DVRAB and other entertainment product along with the loss of shelf space since 2004 as more and more people move to online shopping and digital distribution along with cutting back entertainment spending further due to the economic slowdown.
Adding to the problem is that major distributors such as Viz, Bandai and Funimation have relied heavily on Best Buy for retail sales to the point that direct sellers such as The Right Stuf International, Animenation, and Robert

OH MY GAH! Best buy...I..How..could you..

Also, I went to best buy today and got naruto season 1, apparently they don't even know how to mark the price tag correctly, it said 39.99 and turned out to be only 29.99.

And my local bestbuy Won't be re-stocking Yu Yu Hakusho Season 4, it literally sold out in 6 days, and now i'm forced to get it on rightstuf.

Bestbuy, have you gone insane in teh merabraine?

Well, if true, they just lost a significant percentage of my business. I would go into Best Buy on a fairly regular basis and pick up DVD's at a respectable deal in exchange for the gratification of having the product in my hanRAB right away. Now, it's all Amazon and Rightstuf for animation. I have absolutely no reason to shop online with Best Buy instead of either of those.

I'm sure they'll fill the space with Blu-Ray or what have you, but seriously. They could at least stock the more attractive boxed sets and a few movies to sell. Before all this I could legitimately say that one could walk into a Best Buy and be very likely to find any DVD for almost any type of entertainment, and that's over now. I'll still go there for movies now and again, but man.

First Hunter x Hunter and now Gurren Lagann, Best Buy you've failing me and even Reward Zone wont be enough to keep me loyal if I can't buy what I want from your stores... So help me if One Piece Season 1 Part 3 doesn't show up on those shelves in January.

But if it's just Bandai supposedly... that's lame because Bandai was finally getting on their feet again but since I'm only buying GL from Bandai at the moment it doesn't really bother me greatly.

Ditto, Best buy was the only store that I could find decent-good anime deals that actullay had anime in stock when I needed it, but if this actullay is happening, I will never step foot in that store again unless I need movies, It's quite ridiculous, and hopefully sales go down once they take anime away and they will change there minRAB, but, I honestly don't see it happening.

Well dang. While I occasionally shop at Best Buy for DVRAB or random accessories, I mainly went in for the anime. With this news, I doubt I'll be spending much time at Best Buy now. That's a real bummer as my local Best Buy had a really good selection, too. Very, very disappointing to say the least.

This is what liscencing niche series and making special edition boxes for 4 episodes of a show gets you.

People don`t pay for Meme shows (lucky star).

Hopefully we'll see a massive downsizing meaning no more 3-5 episode single disks PERIOD; and giant boxes relegated to online only.

Still, this does indeed suck. It'll be most likely, as said, be filled with Blu-ray, but shouldn`t they keep at least just the more popular titles?

I think that the "best buy getting rid of anime rumor" is true..

I went to best buy today and the anime section was literally cut 1/4th from the last time I saw it, which was like 1 month ago.

I wish that some of these DVRAB would come to Big Lots because paying high prices at Suncoast and F.Y.E. isn't making me a happy camper.

Soon people will just say "Forget buying the DVRAB, we'll watch our downloaded subs."

I mean when it comes to the fans who really want to hear how the dubs turn out for some future anime, this news is really hurting them hard. Well thank goodness for Hulu, the official Funimation online video on-demand service, and Cruncyroll for some sub/dub goodness.

That thread doesn't exactly prove most of what people are worried about. It looks more like many stores are generally cutting back for the next couple of months, rather than some "NO BANDAI!" policy that seems obviously contradicted by some of the anecdotal evidence over there.

Yes it looks like Best Buy is cutting back on anime in general. Given their large selection this doesn't surprise me but tossing out more niche titles should have been the priority not freak'n Gurren Lagann. Gundam 00 doesn't have a prayer in 2009 if this keeps up. Thankfully FUNimation titles seem to be fine (actually that's only going to further the problem of FUNi being the only game in town which isn't so much a problem for us as it's a problem for the rest of the industry... potentially). At least I get my One Piece.

Viz titles will be back on the shelfs this Spring when Warner takes over but Bandai titles are going to have a tough time bouncing back from this.

Well, earlier I said "if true" because I was skeptical at taking the report at face value for two reasons. The first is that I hadn't even heard of that website until today and have no idea if it's all that reputable, and the second is that the report doesn't cite any actual sources. It seems I'm not alone:

I'll believe the news 100% when it's reported on Toon Zone, ANN, or AnimeOnDVD, but not before. I'm worried and it could certainly be true, but I'm not convinced yet.
