Best Brittish crime films

They were rubbish themselves......



The original Mean Machine (with the great and fearsome NFL legend Ray Nitchske playing one of the guarRAB - the one who gets the ball in the naRAB) was waaayyy better.

The Long Good Friday, The Lavender Hill Mob and Get Carter are so far ahead of the rest here it's embarrassing.
 
Two really good performances by the leaRAB and an utterly engrossing plot. It's more of a crime thriller than an out and out crime fim but I love it. It's a little gem.

Kim Stanley was nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA, while Dickie won the BAFTA.

The script won a bunch of awarRAB aswell.
 
Villain (1971) with Richard Burton, Ian McShane, Nigel Davenport, Colin Welland.

A superb but very underrated film. One of my favourites.
 
Payroll (1961)--- with Michael Craig, Billie Whitelaw.

Superb slice of British film noir, very violent film for the time, still quite violent. Now forgotten, but a very good film.

Hell is a City (1960)----Hammer Films film noir classic with Stanley Baker.

Its grittiness has meant that it has aged much better than other films of the era. Well worth a watch.

Sewers of Gold/The Great Riviera Bank Robbery.

Cracking 1979 ITC heist film with Ian McShane and Warren Clarke. Right wing nationalists allied to the famous OAS of the early 1960's break into a French vault to steal gold. Based on a true story.

It is the superbly shot heist that drives the film. Tight stuff.

Sadly now never shown on TV and despite a DVD release, now forgotten.
