Best Artistic Films Of All Time

Is there ever a film you watch and think "This will carry a legacy or possibly never date"? My choices would be:

Blue Velvet (1986)- Apart from the fashion, it's a very clver mystery film open to many connotations and the film's opening score is beautiful. David Lynch uses a lot of european cinematic conventions without once ripping them off. It also diminished a lot of Hollywood taboos paving way for more graphic depictions.

Taxi Driver (1976)- An insightful view into an ex-veteran's isolation and solitude.

Requiem For A Dream (2000)- Delving into 4 character's addictions, and the sad reality of how major or minor it can be- every aspect of it is bad.
 
For art direction, an underrated sci-fi film called Pitch Black. Saw it at the cinemas and the use of colours/filters was gorgeous. So colourful. That's going by your title, not the legacy bit.
 
Think I may check that out, since we're talking Sci-Fi. The 1927 German film 'Metropolis' is arguably one of the first ever, and it's been incorporated by any especially Madonna for her music video 'Express Yourself'.
 
For me one film would be Silent Running
An intelligent sci-fi film that didn't rely on effects and had a message that's maybe even more relevant today than when it was first made. Never tire of watching it.

A more recent one would be Batman Begins. Think people are already seeing that as the point where superhero movies moved to another level.
 
A true classic, but somewhat spoiled by the appalling Joan Baez soundtrack!

I'll second Blue Velvet. It hasn't dated badly, unlike Lost Highway, which looks really dated now.

the Usual Suspects is another I'd suggest.
 
Sunshine was gorgeous to look at for the whole time through, but yeah the story went a bit downhill in the second half. Still enjoyed it though.

It's Jeunet so it will always look unique and beautiful, it's also a beautiful story, even cold hearted cynical bastarRAB like me can't but help feel warm inside while watching it.
