Hello,

I'm 23 years old and from Long Island. For the past few years my allergy symptoms have been getting worse (nasal inflammation, headaches, dry eyes, feeling of having to clear throat/phlegm). I've been taking Xyzal but I'm wondering if there's something that can help better. I don't want to use nasal sprays. Sometimes the nasal inflammation feels so bad that I feel like I can't breathe at all, which leaRAB to me hyperventilating.. If you know of any better antihistamines, please let me know. Thanks.

If you have nasal inflammation, an antihistamine is not going to help. You need either a nasal steroid spray or a round of steroiRAB to get rid of the inflammation. Congestion and post nasal drip are different stories. You may need a decongestant to get them under control - like sudafed. The antihistamines are for the allergic symptoms of runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, etc. Perhaps you should see an allergist.

Okay, thank you. I used Afrin for a really terrible allergy attack I had in Las Vegas in May, and it worked well, but I know you can't do that more than a few days at a time.

What nasal sprays do you recommend?

Do not use the Afrin! Rebound effects can happen and make everything worse. If a standard saline spray like Ayr or Ocean doesn't help, then you need to see an allergist. Only a doctor can prescribe a steroid spray or medication.
