Best and Worst Voice Recasts in Animation History

In this case I thought her Mars sucked it was far too nasally and sounded NOTHING close to Katie Griffin's Mars who was I thought the best representation of Mars in the English version. It's amazing she gets a lot of flack for making Mars "meaner" but to be honest after watching the Japanese and American versions back to back the way she acted as Mars was perfectly acceptable for the English adaptation.

O-chan

Oh yeah, that's the guys name.

Quincidentaly, a fate very similar to that of the animated Venkman also came upon the animated Garfield; the guy who nowadays voices Garfiled in the new CGI cartoon doesn't do nearly as good a job as Music did portraying the character. Music's Garfield voice sounded natural, but the new guy just sounds like someone forcing himself to sound dry and snarky.

Chester and AJ on The Fairly Oddparents were pretty badly recast. Frankie Munez and whoever did AJ (can't recall the name at the moment) sounded great. Jason Marsden and Gary Leroi Gray sound like nails on a chalkboard (especially Marsden...which is a shame since I like him in other roles).

I know I brought this up on another thread, but I'd like to bring up the voice changes of Sam and Max.

Okay, I know the voices in the cartoon series are different from the ones in Sam and Max Hit the Road (you know, since the cartoon was made by a Canadian animation company and they used Canadian actors)...

...but let's talk about the voices in Telltale's new episodic series of games.

Why in the world would you replace talented voiceover actors Bill Farmer and Nick Jameson with cheap non-union actors from the Bay Area who sound forced, have no range, and have little to no background history?

And not only that, why would you do that when both Farmer and Jameson have already had both of their projects shelved by LucasArts, and not legally allowed to be sold in the United States? Their second one isn't even finished yet!

But many of Telltale's other games use their original actors. Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People, for instance, allows Matt Chapman to voice his many characters, including Strong Bad, Homestar Runner, The Cheat, etc. (And they even let Missy voice Marzipan.)

And in Tales of Monkey Island, they let Dominic Armato voice Guybrush Threepwood and Alexandra Boyd voice Elaine. LeChuck wasn't voiced by Earl Boen early on in the series, but in later episodes (along with revised versions of earlier episodes), Earl Boen voices him.

WHY CAN'T THAT HAPPEN FOR SAM AND MAX?! It's not fair... :(

BEST: Billy West originally voiced Zim in the pilot for Invader Zim, but for the series he was replaced by Richard Horvitz, who did with the role what West could never do.

WORST: On "Angry Beavers", Dag and Norb's mother was voiced by Marsha Wallace, but in the final season, for whatever reason was replaced by Ruth Buzzi, who royally sucked at the character.

Oops. I'll go ahead and edit that. Sorry about that. My mistake. Thank you for pointing it out. I actually remember a few comments on various forums that hoped that the original voice actor for Zoro could go to Funimation, but that didn't seem too likely considering how long a series like One Piece is.

I agree. While Jason Marsden's voice for Chester sounded okay to me in a few moments/episodes of Fairly Oddparents, it does sound a bit too loud for me in the more recent episodes. Plus, I always thought that Chester and AJ's new voices made them sound too old to be ten year olds.

Clive Reville (who was also the initial voice of Palpatine in the original, 1980 cut of The Empire Strikes Back) was the original voice of Alfred on Batman: The Animated Series. Speaking of DCAU voice changes, here's what I dug up:

That's very true, but speaking of Dave Coulier, he also took over for Howie Mandell as the voice of Animal on the long-running Muppet Babies series in season 3.

When Jason Marsden replaced Carlos Alazraqui, the voice of Ricochet on Mucha Lucha. Man I was so mad..

What was his reason for leaving?!!

I still find it insanly humorous that Bill Murray (the live-action Peter Venkman) went on to provide Garfield's voice in the movies. I heard about an urban legend that the reason why the change from Lorenzo Music to Dave Coulier went down was because Murray wondered why the guy playing him had to sound so much lke Garfield!

And to add insult to injury regarding the changes to The Real Ghostbusters, they also changed voice actresses for Janine Melnitz (Laura Summer to Kath Soucie). Basically, the powers that be tried to soften her personality as well as junking her thick New York accent (similar to what Annie Potts used in the movies).

I know it's techically not a cartoon, but on Fraggle Rock, I've always preferred Cheryl Wagner's Ma Gorg to Myra Fried's. Myra made her seem too bland, and Cheryl seemed to give her more personality.

As for the animated Fraggle Rock series, while it would have been nice if they had used the original Muppeteer cast, most of the animated voices weren't really that bad. Boober and Red sounded especially good. (because, honestly, how can anyone not like Rob Paulsen?) The only character I think could have been done better was Junior Gorg.

Mia sums up what I meant...

Whenever you hear Marsden, you know it's him, even though he can fit his voice to virtually any personality. But it is always, and quite distinctly, his voice. Which is why it doesn't work as a replacement for somebody else's voice.

On that note, I would actually exclude Max (from Goof Troop/A Goofy Movie) from that, because Max goes through puperty and thus you expect his voice to change. Puberty is one of the few instances where a voice recast is both expected and allowed to be noticeably different.

Two examples I can think of in terms of near-wholesale cast changes:

Real Adventures of Jonny Quest: Total overhaul halfway through the series. You had Robert Foxworth, followed by Robert Patrick, as Race, and George Segal, replaced by John (Q!) DeLancie, as Dr. Quest. Reasonable, but otherwise off-base.

Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show: It's already been mentioned that Adam West was brought in as Batman with Olan Soule switching to Prof. Stein, and that Shannon Farnon was given the gate after 11 years as Wonder Woman. You forget that Louise (Liberty) Williams had been replaced as Jayna, reportedly by Russi Taylor, after 7 years. The Wonder Twins were written out after three episodes, so that change wasn't as damaging. West was brought in for credibility, and, more than 15 years later, he's still doing toons (Family Guy, for one).

I, also, think part of the problem is when they did The Big Scoop (the episode within the episode of A Wish Too Far), they used the new voices of Chester and A.J. even though the original episode "A Wish Too Far" had been done with Frankie Muniz and Ibrheem Muhammed (I think that's the way the name's spelled). They didn't even attempt to "lampshade" it which made it very, very bizarre!

Back when I still watched the show, I couldn't stand Katie Griffith being recast as Alex on Totally Spies. She made the character's voice sound too loud and high-pitched.

One recast that I didn't mind was Candi Milo as Dexter. It's been awhile since I've seen Dexter's Laboratory, but I honestly couldn't tell the difference between her and Christine Cavanaugh.

Speaking of Cavanaugh, I didn't mind Nancy Cartwright replacing her as Chucky from Rugrats. For the most part, she got the role down, even if she occasionally slipped into a voice that sounded like a nasally Bart Simpson.

Yeah. You're right. I guess I should take back what I said earlier, because I guess even if Dana Hill hadn't passed away, they still probably would have had Marsden voicing the teenage Max. On the other hand, maybe Hill's passing was where they got the idea. I don't know.

Yeah. I always that that was sort of hypocritical of Murray. Maybe his feelings on that changed when Lorenzo died and wanted to voice Garfield out of respect for him. Just a theory.
