Best and Worst Voice Recasts in Animation History

Best recasts

One Piece- I really wasn't a big fan of constantly yelling Luffy, Brooklyn Sanji, and Usopp voices to name a few. The funny thing about Usopp's voice was, in the video games, it wasn't so bad, it was the TV show that was annoying. But, the FUNi cast does the series more justice.

Pokemon- I kind of like TCPI crew more than the 4kids crew. I guess it also helps that I never really was a fan of 4kids crew to begin with. I thought most of the 4kids crew was getting to be quite stale, especially Brock, James, and Jessie for examples. Also as a side note, I thought it was quite hilarious to see 4kids lose the voices and the uproar over them as it did kind of remind me of what the fans of Sonic the Hedgehog were doing around that same time.

Mila Kunis as Meg- Another great recast, seeing as how I can't really imagine Meg being abused by her family with Lacey's voice, or whenever she stands up for herself.

Worst recasts

Sonic Series- I know this isn't a cartoon per se, but at the beginning the new voices from 4Kids voice pool were awful, just awful. Jason's Sonic was grating at first, especially since his voice would fluctuate in tone. Tails still sounded like a girl to me, a fully grown girl. Dan Green's Knuckles just didn't sound right. I think the only one I liked right off the bat was Eggman.

While I do like the first Pokemon cast more, the only real voice I have an issue with is James'. It just sounds too forced, like they're obviously trying to sound like the previous voice, but just can't. Jesse's is actually pretty good, though. Uncannily close to her original one.

on the topic of sailor moon the recast of mina was even worse than sailor moon herself i know Mina a bit of a ditz but the one who played her in the last two seasons made it even more grating making Sailor V sounds competely idiotic want proof i say her playacting as Sailor moon in the two part serena brithday episode is enough.

Jennifer Lien being replaced by Jennifer Martin as the voice of Agent Elle in the last season of Men In Black: The Series is one I particularly disliked. Lien was cool and sexy in the role, Martin was just too...hyper?

And while I grew to accept George Newbern as Superman in Justice League by the second season, I still preferred Tim Daly in Superman: TAS.

I'm confused, is this suppose to be the best or worst? For some reason, I thought that Adam West was an improvement over Olan Soule as Batman. West brought much more "edge" to the role. Soule's, I suppose, came across as more paternal and scholarly. I kind of imagine his Super Friends performance as a bit of an idea of what if Adam West played a more "serious" (a la, the "Fear" episode from the final season, which was the first time that Batman's origin was told outside of the comics) Batman in live-action. The worst Super Friends related recasting was whomever replaced Shannon Farnon as the voice of Wonder Woman in the Legendary Super Powers Show season.

I'm surprised that I forgot about the recast for One Piece. It probably helps that I didn't watch that much of the 4Kids' version of One Piece, but I saw enough to see that the voices and direction did not really work at all for the show. The Funimation cast does a much better job at capturing the characters' emotions and personalities than the 4Kids cast could.

One of the best: Alred in BTAS. For many years, I didn't even know he was recast because Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. took over only five episodes into BTAS and stayed with the character all the way into Justice League. The first four episodes of BTAS feel like they have some sort of Alfred impostor in them, now.

One of the worst: Robot Jones. I couldn't watch the show anymore after they changed his voice. His robotic voice was what interested me about him in the first place, but then they made him sound like some generic kid and even changed the old episodes to have the new voice. Bleh.

I personally really preferred Christophe Caballero's voice work as Odd in Code Lyoko over Matthew Geczy... Matthew's work isn't bad, but I found the original voice to be better, personally.

I disagree with this, along with Rini I thought Mina's new voice was more fitting given how here character changed in the latter seasons. I didn't mind her first voice which had a certain amount of control and maturity. The Japanese voice actress was able to convey both spectrums of Minako's personality but I really don't think the original English actress could of played off the "psycho" Mina as well as the new actress did. The second voice was way more animated and expressive and she did a very good job of represent Mina's less reserved self.

O-chan

Arthur Anderson replacing Lionel G. Wilson as Eustace on 'Courage the Cowardly Dog' springs to mind.
Echoing previous sentiments regarding Candy Milo's portrayl of Dexter, Anderson did his best to keep the spirit of the character alive, but it just wasn't the same. It sounded like an imitation, and was off-putting, especially when the show's usage of stock voices meant the occassional sprinkles of Wilson's 'What's-huh?'s, 'Who the heck are you?!'s and 'Get away from me!'s.
Wilson's Eustace had this gravely, cantankerous tone to it, whereas Anderson's is somewhat whiny in comparisson. That certain comic value Wilson had, that just made me laugh whenever he spoke was missing from Anderson's take.

Also, on the topic of Pokemon; the only ones I'd say were an honest-to-goodness improvement during the big voice over change were the characters that Eric Stuart played. I'm not sure what happened to him, but sometime around mid-Johto his acting ability seemed to take a huge nose-dive. If he wasn't YELLING EVERYTHING, he was severely overacting, and not in a good way.

I have an interesting one:

At the start of season three of The Transformers-Yes the season that Akom's most shoddy work appeared in. There was to be an actor (Ted Schwartz, from the 80's Sipder Man series that wasn't with Iceman or Firestar) to preform Rodimus Prime, Replacing Judd Nelson from the movie. However, this followed with another replacement. This time it was Schwartz that got replaced. By Serpentor's voice actor, Dick Gautier. Honesty, I can't see Hot Rod with Thrasher's voice. So this is a decent change.

Then there's the whole Galvatron voice change. I liked Lenard Nemoy better.

I have to agree, Lacey's Meg voice is too sweet for her to play Meg the way she's been in the most recent eps especially 'Dial Meg for Murder.'

There's something else I want to say about voice recasts. I was interested in what someone mentioned about Adam West who played the live action Batman voicing the animated Batman, because I notice that on the most recent DTV 'Scooby-Doo' movie, Matthew Lillard famous for playing the live action Shaggy will be voicing the animated Shaggy. But I don't want to get too far off topic. Maybe I can start another thread on that.

Uggh I really dislike Bauza Stimpy. The stupid accent he tries to put on sounds forced and well the only reason why Buaza was even picked is because West didn't wanna tarnish his reputation. Adult Party Cartoon is somewhat of a disgusting masterpiece now that I look at it. Other times I wish it never happened. I miss Ren and Stimpy when they used to be cuddly and kid friendly. The old Ren and Stimpy compared to APC is considerably tame even when not compared to it. Do you ever ask yourself why John did what he did? They gave him much creative freedom and the guy went buckwild.

Also I think Candi Milo and West did great replacements.

A interesting trivia is Emilie Barlow (sometimes credited as Emilie-Claire Barlow) who did the voice of Sailor Venus in SMS and SMSS also replaced Katie Griffin as the voice of Sailor Moon for the last 17 episodes of SM R.

The only recasts from Pokemon I can't stand are Jessie, James, and Professor Oak. Jessie's actress squeals pretty much every line, making her sound incredibly forced, unlike Lillis' smooth, almost alluring voice. Zoppi is a better actor for James, but his voice is way, way too snooty. And Professor Oak...well, he sounds like Gary trying to imitate LittleKuriboh's grandpa Moto voice.

I didn't mind Chabert as Meg on Family Guy, but I do think Kunis' voice fits the character better.

Regarding the same series, I also despised the change from Ed O'Ross to Gregg Berger as Agent K after the first season. The latter's voice was too robotic for my taste.

And I think everyone would agree with me that having Tiffany replace Janet Waldo as Judy in Jetsons: The Movie was a pretty bad idea.

I thought that the 4Kids voice for Zoro was the best one out of the main case, so I can see why you would still prefer that voice for the character. I liked that voice for Zoro, but I generally prefer Funimation's voice for him.
