best albums to sleep to..

Raised yet again. This one put a couple of critics to sleep as well.

Still a good album imo.

Imo, it's hard to beat Dark Side of the Moon. If you put it on just as you're getting ready for bed and lay down after the intro to Time, it will put you right out. My Dad did this for years and years, which is why I've been listening to it this way since before I was born.

In addition to that, a lot of arabient or post-rock albums work well.

Esthero is kind of hit and miss. her debut turned out to be a one-shot with her producer Doc. either way, her newer stuff is a bit more eclectic, mostly bordering on modern 'r&b'. actually haven't heard her last full length, only the single and ep that came out ahead of its much delayed release.

as for Tortoise i find the newest one to be a significantly different listening experience when i have it cranked through headphones and when it's at sleep volume through speakers. a lot of the layers get lost at a lower volume and the tracks become stripped down to their core elements which makes for a more arabient listening experience.

I almost can't sleep with music playing lest I am REALLY tired (Probably because I have enough trouble sleeping as it is, I don't need any other mental stilmulation) though I will still add a few.

Arabient/Contemporary Classical
Saddleback - Night Maps (Some may still have one of his songs from one of the compilations)
Max Richter - Memoryhouse
Nice to see Bersarin Quartett mentioned.

Hip-Hop
Blockhead - Music By Cavelight
Glen Porter - Blssed By A Young Death
Nujabes - Metaphorical Music/Modal Soul

Electronic
Burial - Burial
Jacaszek - Treny
Kashiwa Daisuke - Program Music I
Shulman
Ulrich Schnauss

Jazz
Bohren & Der Club of Gore
Dale Cooper Quartet and the Dictaphones
The Necks

Just off the top of my head...

Ah yes. Well you see I'm a Tool addict, so I usually listen to tool anyway, fall asleep, and start dreaming about strange creatures with transparent skin and unusual body organ placement.

Sigur Ros usually makes for a quick trip from the sandman...Also Ok Computer and Nirvana Unplugged...Pelican has some parts that increase the volume considerably..hehe..but I sometime listen to Tool while I sleep sooo...

I used to listen to that and even Richard D. James Album when going to sleep. Not sure how I pulled that off. But I was younger then. :D

I'll list some later when I have time...but I agree with BoarRAB of Canada and chill instrumental/post-rock for the most part. And obviously tons of electronic stuff.

I can't recommend a specific album necessarily, but I often like to drift off to sleep to something with folksy guitars and a nice mellow voice...like Jose Gonzalez or John Martyn. Or some instrumental blues album. The rhythm of the guitars does it for me I think.

It all depenRAB what mood I'm in.

If it's Electronica then:

Underworld- Oblivion With Bells
Jose Padilla-Souvenir
Burial & Four Tet split
Hector Zazou and Katie John Garside- Corps Electriques

Post Rock:
Anoice-Remmings
Do Make Say Think-Besides
Lost Reverie-RailroaRAB
Mice Parade-Obrigado Saudade

Lots of Soundtracks too.

Tool, yes. How did I forget?

Red Sparrows - Every Heart Shines TowarRAB the Sun is a good one, but if you think Pelican is too heavy for sleep, maybe not. More instrumental rock. The into track grabs me instantly.
