It was okay. I just saw the 3D version earlier today at Cineworld in Sheffield. I thought the 3D was impressive, it's come a long way since the crappy red/green glasses of the 80's, but it's still far from perfect 3D, i noticed quite a few "shadows" around the characters, particularly during the dialogue heavy moments.

On to the film itself though, i'd give it about a 7/10, imo there wasn't enough action until the last 20 minutes or so, and by then it was a case of too little too late, but that final 20 minutes was definitely very good. I really didn't like this motion capture style though, i kept thinking throughout the film that it would have been better if they'd done it in the style of '300' and actually had real actors against CGI backgrounRAB (although i suppose that would have meant no Ray Winstone, and it would have probably presented problems with Angelina's nudity). And what was up with John Malkovich? He sounded like he was reading his lines in over the phone!

I'm glad i saw it though, if only for the experience of the 3D. That said though, did anyone else's showing have the trailer for the 3D version of 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' starring Brendan Fraser? The 3D on that didn't look good at all, i felt like i was going cross eyed, and it made me feel quite sick. Maybe 3D should stick to cartoons, because it definitely doesn't suit "real" films if that was anything to go by.

Yeah they had the trailer for Journey to the centre of the earth before the 3d version of beuwolf I saw in the cineworld in cardiff. I thought the 3d was amazing but the film was good but not amazing as I thought it was going to be. However it is well worth seing in 3d in the cinema!

The only place I know of in Scotland is the Glasgow Science Center, which is showing it on their iMax screen.....in 3D. Personally I fancied seeing this film, but on learning it was all digitally created (ok using motion capture), I lost interest in it.

He's right. But for me this is where the film fails; a literary metaphor doesn't necessarily work as a movie metaphor. While I admire the technical accomplishments (the 3D, the superb digital image), the story presents itself in a very flat manner, there's almost no thought involved for the viewer. After around 2 hours I was disappointed that all I was essentially given was "don't screw around". It's a deeply boring film. Then again, I only wanted to see how the 3D experience compared to IMAX so I can't cry about it too much.

Ok, the film was pretty good, nothing more.

BUT

How the hell is it ONLY rated a 12?????? Jesus christ! The gore and stuff was pretty extreme, it was a 15 easily.

Cant for the life of me understand why it would only get a 12 rating.

Because it wasn't real? Same goes for 300. Days gone by it would have been an 18, but you knew you were watching essentially a cartoon, hence the lower rating. More so for Beowulf.

I think the main reason it was rated 12 was because the violence was taking place in a fantasy setting. Sure there was gore, but most of it came out of mythical creatures, and is deemed less "disturbing".

One of the trailers from the US is actually rated R, and includes much more gore than what we actually got in the theatrical version (e.g. the bit where Grendel picks up a man and you see him grab his leg only for it to cut away quickly. In the "uncut" version we actually see Grendel rip his leg off in all it's gory glory). Expect a 15 rated DVD version.

While i think this was quite violent, i think it would be placed at the higher end of the 12 rating, and imo didn't deserve a 15 certificate. Maybe the BBFC should bring back the 12 certificate in cinemas, and have films like this purely for 12's and above, while still retaining the 12A for "softer" 12's.

I went to see this today and I enjoyed it. It was very easy to follow, the 3D made it so much more interesting to watch too, it gave it almost a dream like effect and two hours flew by in what seemed like half an hour! So if you're looking for a bit of escapism for a few hours, this is the one for you.
