Anyone have any suggestions as to how to taper at home? Have no problem with the access to meRAB but would like to try and taper with as little discomfort as possible. Thinking of January as I dont wont to ruin the kiRAB Christmas for them with a cranky/out of it Mummy. Cannot go away to rehab due to financial reasons and my kiRAB, one of which has severe autism.

Well, I am not an expert on Benzo's.. however, I would think you could taper them like I did with the pain meRAB. The first week take one less pill a day than 7 days later drop one mroe pill from your daily routine and so on.. However, I do not know if that is the correct way to do it.. It just makes sense to me.. I bet someone on here can give you more info..

Good luck to you.. You can and will find the strength to do this! Good for you. Hang around here and we will help get you thru this!

Monkey,

DO NOT try to taper yourself from benzo's at home. You need to have a doctor's supervision regarding a taper. It is very dangerous to do this by yourself - you could have a seizure if you don't do it correctly. I had a seizure two months ago - I was driving on a busy street here in Toronto, and luckily I was at a red light when it happened. I could have killed myself, or another person.

Talk to your doctor, and its VERY important that you tell him/her exactly how many you are taking. If you taper too much/too quickly, you'll have a seizure. I'm not trying to scare you...I just want you to understand the consequences.

I was in Rehab in July/August and a girl I became good frienRAB with, had a seizure while we were on our morning walk. Right there in front of me! It was the scariest thing I'd ever seen.

When she arrived at Rehab, she wasn't honest about how many benzo's she was taking so when they started to taper her, it was too much too fast and she had a seizure.

Just be careful - good luck.

I have to echo what emsmom posted . . . do NOT try to taper too much, too quickly.

I take Klonopin for an anxiety disorder. A few months ago, I went through a really bad patch, and had to up my dose (from 1mg a day to 2mg). I am now working on getting the dose back down to where it was. My doctor told me to taper VERY gradually. Don't go from 3 pills to 2 - go from 3 pills to 2-3/4, then 2-1/2, and so forth. If you taper too fast, you can seizure, and from what I understand, the seizures can be BAD.

Be careful. This is going to take some time, but it's best for your health to be patient and take it slow.

Good luck with it.

Never ever taper benzo`s rapidly, no one can say that you WLL have a seizure, i did a benzo cold turkey and did not, not everyone has a seizure, however the miriad of other distressing, disabling and frightning withdrawal symptoms which lasted for years were enough. GO SLOWLY, and you will stand a much better chance of coming out unscathed. The general concenssus is to taper by roughly a mg per month, (This is a guestimate as i do not know what dosage you are on,) and less as you get further down, but i believe its up to the comfort of the individual.
