same effect in building? strength?

I'm not bench pressing to develop muscle. I'm only bench pressing cause I'm training for my Police entrance exam and I need to bench press 90lbs or according to one own weight. Now I know that generally you are suppose to keep the barbell above the nipple area when lowering the bar I always lower just below my boobs which would below the nipple will I still be able to achieve and build up that strength that i am trying to get?

I am not able to bench 90lbs right now I'm only benching 50 lbs and I do 5 sets of 4-5 reps is that good?
