Bell TV to have a 3D PPV channel by year's end

Got a call from the Bell TV public relations staff today who wanted to tell me that Bell TV will have a 3D PPV channel by years end.

No details given and no specific time frame.

My guess is they will launch it around the same time a bunch of 3D movies come out on Blu-ray. (i.e. Fourth quarter just before Christmas time.)

I guess this means our HD receivers are 3D compliant. Also wondering if they can send HD audio through to an audio receiver?

So, I dunno. Shaw is pushing 3D. So is Sony ... who wants me upgrade my widescreen TV for another $3k+ to get it.

The more "immersive" the content is ... sounds good ... although "3D" aka stereoscopic vision goes back two centuries to the 1850s, I believe. Once it evolves past a parlour trick with funny glasses into a "holodeck" ST:TNG experience, then you have my attention.

Having said that, I applaud every TV provider willing to commit dollars today to push the envelope. Shaw is doing that with the Golf Masters and other initiatives. With respect others -- including Bell -- are delivering nothing today other than future promises.

My viewing habits may not be typical: but to spend the money on special glasses for everyone in my household and then pay $xx for a PPV event ... it's not high on the entertainment budget.

If and when 3D TV delivers the experience without special glasses -- even if I have to invest in a new TV and subscribe to a special channel -- not till that day do you have my serious interest. I do not believe this is the "new HD" signalling a paradigm shift in how we consume video ... in the way colour, and later HD, has proven.

I was just looking at 3D accessories:

40" 3D TV -----starting at $2499.00

4ft 3Dhd cable---------$69.99

3D Glasses---------- $249.99 each

I have 4 people in my family, that would make it at least $4000.00 to get started.
Im sure prices will become lower eventually.

I can't see myself making the change.

What is the added viewing benefit from these new "shutter glasses" vs. the older "red/blue" glasses? The older technology doesn't need a new TV, new BluRay player or new cables and the glasses were free and worked just fine! A few year's back I remember watching "Sharks 3D" on Discovery channel.

i remember one time seen jaws in a movie theater in 3d. those was old 3d glasse (the one that are made in paper with blue and red ...). are the new glasses will be better? because now i wore glasses and with those kind of glasses i have a hard time looking at the screen with those old 3d glasses.

The new glasses are better quality than old glasses but yeah at that price I'll totally pass
The other thing to remember is the glasses need to be recharged so for the avg user that means 1 (maybe 2 if lucky) movies and then you cant watch tv for a while.... no thnx

Different 3D implimentation and basically non-compatible... you need the new $250 variety to view the new technology... dig deep!

3D has failed how many times? Just another gimic to suck ppl in to buying a revived fad that will fade away yet again.

Personally, I don't see 3DTV ever hitting "mass" penetration in its current incarnation.

Having said, this thread is about Bell TV and a 3D channel. Not the value of 3DTV.

Please stick to the topic at hand.

Well, I can certainly understand why Bell wants to jump on the 3D bandwagon, and one channel isn't a huge commitment. If it fails to impress, they drop the channel. No big deal.

Mike,
I agree. From Bell's perspective its just a re-purposed PPV channel. I wonder if it will require extra bandwidth so it could actually be two re-purposed PPV channels.

any word when bell will start to show some 3d channels?...shaw aired the masters in 3d.

Bell aired the final two rounds of the Masters in 3D on channel 1000 as well. As of now, no 3D channels exist in Canada or the US.

Most of the 3D content in the near future will be disc based, 3D Blu Ray movies and 3D dvds. For these you will need both a compatible TV and player.

DirecTV was at CES showing off 3D content that will be available using their service.

ESPN will be launching a 3D version of it's sports network on June 11th, 2010. If this is successful then expect to see more TV channels following quickly.

ESPN showed the September 12th, 2009 USC vs. Ohio State game in 3D in campus theaters and in select theaters around the US.

Having said all that...these things are all happening in the good ole US of A...when someone in Canada purchases the right to sim-sub any 3D that becomes available...is anyone's guess.

so current Bell HD receivers will supply the 3D programing? Thats at least a bit of good news for early adopters..

Yes they handle it quite well, from what I am hearing. All the HD models, not just the latest ones.

EDIT;

Thanks for merging the threads Hugh, I knew there was another thread around somewhere.....lol
