Bell TV Pricing, themes and programming package discussion

Up untill about a week ago I was receiving TLC HD on Ch 826. The channel has now dissapeared. I do subscribe to More HD Variety which is supposed to include the channel.

Makes no sense to me either. It was a real pain for me because I have no interest in sports channels. And in order to subscribe to a minimum 4 HD packages, I had to get one of the HD sports, which meant I had to get SD sports 1. Took me over an hour how to figure out to keep everything I already + get the HD packages just so I could watch TLC HD and keep the price within 2 or 3 dollars. I certainly wasn't going to let things go up by 5 dollars, or the 8 dollars the call centre agent wanted me to do!

You're right. To see all the channels, I go to the "channel locks" feature where every channel available is shown.

Hey Sgt...
If you want a very close comparison between Shaw and Bell for HD programing would look like this.

Shaw HD + HD plus = $66.95
Bell HD + HD 5 pack + Sports 1 = $58.00

It can be done, with digital basic and only the associated free HD channels, plus one non-sports HD theme. (2 HD themes if you bundle with an internet or cellphone plan, since that would knock $5 off your price)

This question has been asked before. The answer is that your $10 HD is secure as long as you don't change your HD channels. It is OK to change your SD themes or any pay TV (TMN, MC etc.). More than one subscriber has testified that they made such changes without affecting their HD.

Yes but you will not get RDS HD by just subscribing to the HD theme pack that it is in, HD More Sports. It has linkage.

Look under HD theme Packs.
Bell can do anything they want but it's anything but simple.

Sorry, I don't share your defeatist attitude. When I get robbed I protest. You know your "its a free world" means you don't have to follow my posts. Just hang on the Borg will be here shortly.
Anyone who has or had the old $10 HD packaging would know and attest to its marketing.

Actually just had a CSR confirm that you have to sub to SD sports AND variety theme packs to get their associated HD theme channels.

Also, is Bell offering anything in place of the now outdated "Superbowl Special", or is it just a bad time to join Bell right now?

As far as I know you'd keep the channels you named. They aren't tied to the SD channels. In fact based on the latest brochure I may even have been wrong about TSN as the little asterisk indicating a SD_HD link has suddenly disappeared (see PDF at Bell website). I'm going to investigate further. Maybe I can save too!

Pretty much decided to dump Shaw due to Audio drops on more than just HD. Their DCT is almost as crappy as their DSR.

So question is:
After I have the digital basic with the free HD's and that's probably all I really need anyways, if you ADD a theme, how long do you have to keep it and how easy is it to get back to the original plan?
I think Shaw Direct could swap themes and prorate to the day, but even 1 month minimum would be OK.

Given that you need to subscribe to SD "Sports 1" pack to get TSN/TSN2 HD (in "HD Sports" pack), does one also have to subscribe to SD "Sports 2" pack to get Rogers Sportsnet HD (in "More HD Sports" pack)? I thought just SD "Sports 1" pack was needed to get access to all HD theme pack channels (except for RaptorsHD).

Yeah I agree. There is no reason one should have to pay for a channel twice. To be fair, Bell does allow you subscribe to Showcase HD without the associated SD theme but this does not apply to all channels and especially not sports

I called BTV today about something else. The csr seemed clueless but said I should get Showcase HD ( as I subscribe to the SD package). I will find out this evening if any changes have been made. SIGH

Because, believe it or not, all the Channels do not show up in the "All Channels" Guide...

Well after a week of calls to India, Winnipeg and Quebec, Tonight I finally got someone who knew what they were doing. The guy told me they were having a problen seeing 826TLC HD on their 6100 and were referring to System Control. My problem was with getting 826 on my 9242 PVR. They did a complete download (again) and this time it worked. I now have TLC HD. Thanks.
