Bell to add six new HD Channels on June 10th

Yeah, not sure what's been up with SunTV lately. Their local Ottawa OTA broadcasts of Smallville and Supernatural this week were both windowboxed (the term given to this "boxing"), same as the BTV feeds. And 2-channel. Fortunately, this week someone at BTV was awake and pulled the plug on the simsub for WGNHD after a few seconds of Smallville, and restored the fullscreen/DD5.1 WGN feed.

Last week, the Smallville/SunTV simsub started out windowboxed, but BTV temporarily switched back to WGNDT fullscreen/DD5.1 after a few minutes. During the first ad break, BTV again switched to the SunTV simsub, but it was now fullscreen/2-channel, and remained that way at least until a minute after the start of Supernatural (at which time my Smallville recording ended). Closed captioning was absent until about 27 minutes into the show.

Through the regular broadcast season, the local Ottawa OTA Sun HD feed for Smallville/Supernatural was normally fullscreen, with a DD5.1 carrier. As I said above, not sure what's going on now. Hopefully in the future, BTV and SunTV will get things worked out, and we'll get a proper fullscreen/DD5.1 feed from SunTV.

Moderator: I know there is a separate discussion for faulty simsubs, and was planning to post most of this there, but as new channels are added, I think we also need to compare their quality vs. any channels they may be supplanting (via simsub), so I think some initial observations are also relevant here.

Bell used to use 1080i on some channels but with the bandwidth limitations they dropped all channels to 720p.

I see it as a channel I do not subscribe to, so it must have been in free view I guess.

Bell is based out of Montreal even though their satellite tv is based in Toronto.

Unfortunately OTA is not an option for a lot of us. Even if it were. No matter who you sub to you are still forced to pay for all the redundant locals before you can add the specialties.

So?

Are you saying there is a bias towards French services as opposed to English ones?! They are supposed to be a NATIONAL satellite broadcaster, which means they are supposed to serve all of Canada not just Quebec.

872 is actually not a duplicate as Sportnet HD 5 has been removed for some time now. You also forgot about the changed lineup with your listings, like Discovery being on 827 and TSN 2 on 851, amongst others.

The free preview for Golf Channel in HD did indeed expire.

It is only available to people with the updated HD theme packs. I believe it's in More HD Sports.

Who has the "best" HD in Canada then? My Aunt has SHAW cable and it's more pixelated than streaming video at times. I actually think given the channels they have to offer, BELL's quality isn't THAT bad. Some channels are better than others, but the sports channels I'm quite happy with.

So excited to read the headlines!!!! What a let down in the crap they serve us!!!!! Man what do I need with HD Montreal when I have Toronto, what a waste of bandwidth!!!

Oh thats an easy one. You will have to subscribe to it. I believe it's in More HD Sports.

What a waste of time money and resources from BEV....I want quality HD not quantity.
Useless bunch of channnels that will eat up more bandwith, which judging from the PQ status of BEV, they certainly can't afford.

BEV has the most HD, not the best HD.

Because I refuse to subscribe to SD channels on principal. I don't want to pay $8 for a package when I only want 1 or 2 of those channels.

I made up my mind to drop all SD packages and stay with HD. I also realized I was getting ripped off by paying for a duplicated SD channel when I already received it in HD (ie. National Geographic, etc).
