Bell Legacy Package to end Shortly

You may doubt all you want, but many companies who are entering a market for a first time do all kinds of things.

MTS offered (a few months ago) "lifetime" free whole house PVR and no box rental fees when they introduced their new "ultimate" package. I have a personally addressed form letter stating that. Telus offered "lifetime" packages when they first introduced their cell packages. When ExpressVu made the offer they had less than 0.1% of the market.

All those offers have been held up as valid to the consumer in the courts.

Six weeks since the OP stated this was happening and zero from Bell. We shall see who is correct.

For the record, I too have been with expressvu long enough to have a dishnetwork smartcard. I am in the exact same situation as sillyrabbit, as a matter of fact I believe I am on the 'House Special'.

Surprisingly, over the weekend I noticed a bunch of heavy equipment being offloaded on the road near my Telus DSLAM. I guess I will be getting Optik sooner rather than later. Bell is guaranteed to be losing me as a longtime customer, and I couldn't be happier.

I still don't understand why some of you are ready to ditch Bell after 15 years or so. Just because your rates have gone up a bit? Get real, everyone else has had their rates go up over the years why shouldn't yours? And why not pay a little more since in the past 15 years they've added many many new channels? I guess the only thing I could say is nothing lasts forever so quit crying.

Hi jft you said "the Legacy package is to end in approximately one month." I don't know what a platform is but it sounded like you were talking about program packages. What is a platform package?

I've never heard of geneises and we can't call BELL. is this something I can see on our online account? Are we going to need a new receiver? We cant get Sat 82 here so an HD rcvr is of no use to us.

If you go to this link http://www.bell.ca/web/tv/en/on/pdfs/channels/channels.pdf you can see all their theme packages and pricing options. I believe the a la carte packages are only available in Quebec for the time being and as such may be harder to find on their website.

That's legacy. Keep it for as long as you can until you research what channels you want under the current package. It may be very similar in price to move.
You aren't paying for HD for a 3100, are you? I assume you have an HD receiver.

There's no "Retention page". Call Bell and ask.

Well it has happened I got my undated letter to day from Ma Bell telling me that I will automatically get a $5.00 increase on my Legacy package effective June 2010 The package will be terminated February 2011.I was advised to seek out the new programming packages.

I contacted Bell and spoke to a CSR who was very pleasant and she told me I am getting the price increase because the other packages have gone up and this one has not. Whether that is true or not I do not know????

I checked out some addional packages and my new bill will be would be $48.00 with 4 theme packs.I would get more channels but I would loose WGN not thats any great loss

I am sitting tight snd doing nothing at this point in time Basically I waiting to see if ala carte programming is coming to Ontario.

If i could figure a way to record HD from over the air at a reasonable cost I know about Tivo I would cancel my account as I have am HD antennae.

So if anyone has success with the grandfathering aspect I would interested in hearing about it.

Hey thanks for that velix. So i guess a lot of channels are in ala carte in Quebec but not all. Like BBC News is still only in a pkg. any rumors on whether other provinces might get ala carte? I "live" in Ontario. :)

I'm sure when those people signed up for Bell 15 years ago, they were receiving each channel at full DVD bandwidth instead of the youtube-quality picture Bell gives now.

I'm just guessing based on what's been said here, but it appears there's two groups of programming packages: legacy, which is what original subscribers might have, e.g. Deluxe or The Works. If your bill has a $5.99 system charge on it, you're Legacy. And then there's Genesis, which is what newer subs get. If you have a $2.99 system charge on your bill, you're Genesis.

It would indeed suck if they force us to change. I have "Deluxe" and every time I have to call Bell for something, the CSR always tries to get me to "upgrade" to a new programming package. But then when he runs the numbers and it's always at least $10/month more. I'm sure they must know this beforehand but still try to screw us anyhow.

I just checked my bill online and I don't see anything about his change though, so maybe the CSR had it wrong.

@visiter555: Your "contract" has long expired and the bell TV user agreement says it clearly "we do what we want to do as long as we let you know in advance" You can pretend logal all you want and even pretend not to receive the letter informing you, but you are only fooling yourself. These packages are changing wit good reason, bell probably looses money on the "old" legacy programming and is out of date with the market rates for TV, as high as they are at the present time :)

@1500cc: The "save offer" would be good for 12months at a time (like any other company even IF you took a contract). Call back in 10-11 months to renegotiate of there's any save offers left at that time...

@pinza: If you need a description or a brochure of older programming I may have something that can help you out just PM me.

@motopsycho: I would try again and speak to a different retention agent, i've heard of some people getting at the very least an extension of their price plan until the Legacy program package expires in Feb 2011. Call 310-bell and ask for cancellations you will get a price for at least tv and internet. There is no such thing as "Nothing I can do" unless you are already getting a discount on that particular service. If not then you just hit an agent that was incompetent (It happens even with retention)

Likewise... I received the exact same letter today. I was one of the original EV clients back in the say.

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the older Programming Guides, like the Legacy ones etc.

I only have the paper copy of the version with the "Rogers" remote on the cover.....lol

I know you can't find it on the Bell web site. Agents have access to it internally, but they can't send it to you.

You can always call and ask them to tell you the information - what's in each legacy theme pack. I'll see if I can remember to look up Destination.

Whatever Bell does with this, I can forecast it will mean less revenue from me. I've been paying a substantial amount since 2003 without any mods to my package to maintain it. If they force the move to the Genesis platform I will be cancelling several stations. Many have modified their programming and I don't watch them anymore or very rarely do. Clearing out the deadwood should save about $20 per month with the new 15 or 20 a la carte. I'd have to let go one station I really liked to avoid the $5 favourites. I prefer to keep my programming as is in case they air a show I like, but if Bell forces the move I will cancel about 30 stations I rarely watch.

Would I be forced to switch out of legacy now if I upgrade to HD;
(I would still use only 1 receiver)

I remember when chocolate bars were 25 cents, and they were bigger, too.

You wouldn't expect to buy a house today for the same price you paid a decadce ago. You wouldn't expect the price of food to be the same as it was a decade ago. You can't always get the same product you saw on the shelf a decade ago. Companies change stuff.

HD has really expanded over the last few years, and there have been plenty of changes to channels, agreements with providers, and packaging.

I doubt you'll do any better with another provider - I recommend you do your research first, just as I'd recommend you do your research before updating your Bell TV package.

And if you're experiencing "You-Tube quality picture", you may need a new tv or receiver. I don't know of any channel offered by Bell TV that gives that poor a quality.:p
