I watched the Habs game on RDS HD yesterday afternoon on a 50" Panasonic with Bell HD and the PQ was just beautiful. Which makes me wonder does anyone know how much compression has to take place before a difference in PQ is noticed

Hi,
I've just come back from 2 weeks in Florida and it is my view that HD PQ in the states is much superior to here. Do they have much more bandwidth available and if so why them but not us?
Thanks,
Robin

With a 1080p projector on a 110" screen I have not noticed any difference to be frank. It varies depending on the source, I remember MLB games in summer that looked so bad they could

That is correct, I had the 6100 receiver about a month before I had a hdtv and was watching hd channels on a regular tv in letterbox sd. Sorry for being off topic.

I'll go with the PQ all depends on what you are watching. I've seen some shows lately that look to be better then what they used to be, but can still see compression artifacts on movement, and before I get maybe it's your tv or you need a better tv, none of these artifacts are noticeable at all on Blu Ray or PS3 games or DVD, just BellTV, both SD and HD. NFL broadcasts have not looked any better, CFL broadcasts have and NHL all depends on the feed. SportsnetHD feeds look better then most feeds out of the states. However, Heroes tonight on NBC HD East looked terrible. There was no simsub of Global and the feed looked really bad tonight. This might be the channel as some shows on NBC HD West the last few days have looked good.

You would still need to have an HD receiver to do the conversion to SD. SD channels don't take up much room, so unless each SD channel has an HD equivalent, there is not much point in forcing everyone to buy an HD box to save a little bit of bandwidth for better HD PQ.

I would have to disagree with you there. Working for a cable company in the past i can tell you that porn ppv's are a huge money maker. It was always entertaining to check out which ppv's irate customers were ordering and believe me there was a lot of porn ppv's on numerous accounts.

2nd you're talking about dropping SD channels not HD channels so realistically thats not going to make much of a difference, granted i could do without some of the Red carpet stuff but honestly i do watch PPV movies and events and do pay for them. the PPV movies are cheaper than going to blockbuster to rent one and i can record it if i feel like it. And latly there have been quite a few ppv movies released the same day as they are in the rental store which has been very nice.

Just a note on the movie networks HD, they have looked absolutly spectacular latly.

I think, like many have pointed out here, that it is certainly SOURCE DEPENDANT, as to the variations I see on PQ from CH to CH. It is a hit and miss with certain program.... bottom line, there is ZERO CONSISTANCY here with BEV.
I really can't say for sure... but whether viewed on my 42" 768 P Pany or 60" 1080p Pioneer Kuro, when the feed is bad, it shows up on both sets.

This depends on the service provider in the US. Some US providers use optical all the way to the home, therefor no compression. Some providers used Switched Digital Video, therefore also alleviating some of the bandwidth issues. The satellite providers in the US probably have similar compression issues to BTV, however, this is not the thread for that discussion, it's about whether BTV is improving. BTV has bandwidth limitations, hence the need for "compromize".

the funny thing you guys say about golbal hd is the picture quality is so bad.it really isn't bad at all when you watch it over the air from toronto.the problem must be the way bell is recieving the channel.golbal hd over the air is as good as any hd channel i recieve from buffalo or toronto.

That's weird since Global supposedly supplies a 720P signal to BTV since BTV changes all the 1080i signals to 720P.

The issue may only be with certain programming which you're not seeing...

yeah I also noticed that my HD is looking better. I am still having audio sync problems on some channels on some shows but it seems to be random - the worst type!!

I am waiting for new replacement smart cards for my new smart cards so hopefully things will clean up on the audio front a well.

What the heck is going on with BEV !!!!!! At times the PQ is great, not fantastic, but certainly acceptable on most HD channels.
Now, right after the holidays ending, say around Jan 2-3 the PQ just went to crap!!!
I don't understand, with all those extra "holiday Channels" added, like the fireplace log, 2 more HD PPV etc...... one would think that the PQ would be worst, when in fact it was not that bad.
Now that some of those channels have disappeared you would think they would have more bandwith available and therefore a better PQ.
Well, for what its worth the PQ has not improved.

SEND US THE TRANSMISSION IN ITS ORIGINAL 1080I FROM MOST SOURCES!! STOP CHANGING ALL THE 1080I TO 720p. ENOUGH ALREADY!!

Looking at the epg on my receiver I counted 10 rc ppv, 20 porn ppv, and 30 movie ppv sd channels. So drop 15 movie ppv, 10 rc and 20 porn for a total of 45 channels. That should be good for perhaps 4 or 5 more hd channels, or even better would be to add none and give more bandwidth to the hd channels we have now.

This is just what I would do, and Bell would not if they are making good money with their ppv channels. I have never met anyone who pays for porn ppv on Bell. They steal it, or at least they used to.

Adding a channel to a transponder (TP) might squeeze other channels on the same TP, but would not affect channels on any other TP. So adding the Fireplace channel(s) could only negatively impact a small number of other channels that share the same TP.

I have also noticed an improvement in HQ quality over the past few days. However, I have noticed that the volume coming from most SD sources has dramatically dropped off. So much so that I have to significantly raise the volume to hear it at a decent level... only to wet myself when I switch back to an HD source.

Anyone else experiencing this?

well on my tv all the canadian dtv channels i get including global are all in 1080 thats what my tv says.talking about the ota channels from hamilton and toronto

I agree. I noticed several programs over the last few days that looked less "flat" than they have for most of the last year. I hope this is a sign that further PQ improvements are on the way!
