Bell ExpressVu Retentions?

I got my brand new Bell HD PVR 9242 free one year rental installed today; the Tech made it so that two HDTVs in 2 rooms could access the dual tunners (pretty neat setup), made me have a Shaw HD-PVR 6412 and a Digital Terminal homeless (for sale...) Shaw(dy) is BYE BYE on May 2nd.
I am pretty pleased as how Bell handled it to retain me as a customer, very impressed! and the Video-Audio quality are way better than Shaw's.
My wife is happy.... and anyone married knows that's a GOOD thing!

Darz like the topic of this post if you can't get your 6100 working call the retention department if you need a receiver.

I went for the $299 9242 upgrade but I'm starting to regret it. Not that the 9242 is a bad receiver but it's a bad deal for me.
1. Why should I pay to replace a receiver that Bell f'd up with bad firmware?
2. Now I have a 9200 that has been devalued considerably due to Bell's discounts. A receiver Bell will have to upgrade eventually when they switch to MPEG4.
3. Dish is giving away free upgrades to VIP722s and they are a better unit than the castrated 9242. (I doubt Bell is paying more than $300 for the 9242.)

I think I just got suckered again.

I just called Bell retentions, told them I had been getting offers from the cable company, got upgraded to the 9242, free install and free rental for 1 year. Was offered 20% off programing for a year, asked him if that was the best he could do, then bumped it up to 30%. All on a 1 year contract. Not too bad considering I was not planning on switching, especially since I just signed up for NHL Centre Ice for the first time this year, and still have 3 payments left to make on it.

Update:
When I called to officially cancel and go to Shaw, here's what they offered:

40% off programming
free rental of 9242 HD PVR
Total cost to me: $86 per month, including 2, 9242's, 2, 4100's. Programming is Digital Standard, 5 theme packs, Movie Central / HBO and 4 HD theme packs.

So that's an awesome deal. I'm quite surprised they went that low, but I'll take it as I feel that overall the quality (especially the HD PVR) is better on Bell.

I called today and got the 9242 free for 1 year...have to send back 9200 which I have been renting for more than a year. I got 30% off programming for 1 year. I still had to pay the $100 deposit on my CC though. I tried to complain a bit but she said she had to do it that way. Technician is coming May 27th. My Bill was over 100 as well per month...now down to around $60 with no rental fee. I think its a good deal. Now to change my programming.

Make sure you get 2 x SW21's. Using 1 x SW21 will not be enough for the $499 receiver, assuming you are referring to a 9200/9242 or 9241. These are all Dual Tuner HD PVR's and require 2 seperate feeds to function correctly.

If you intend to keep your existing receiver as well, you will need the SW44.

If you are referring to a 6141 or 6131 then the $499 is way too much.

I just called and got denied the "new customer" rate of $299 for the 9242. All I could get was 25% off the purchase as a 2 year Term Renewal, plus I'd have to pay $75 for installation. I told them no thanks and that I'd call back. :(

I got transferred to the direct sales dept. from billing, which might've been the problem. My renewal is not for another 2 weeks, so maybe I just called too early?

My friend tried again to negotiate a deal to get a discount on an HD receiver (w/ or w/o PVR), and no deals like before said, except for 2 months worth of monthly fee credit and that's it. He mentioned the Shaw trade in offer, etc, didn't work. When he asked to be cancelled, he was merely told that it requires a 30 day notice.

Eventually my friend phoned and asked it to be cancelled and indeed it was set for cancellation without even going to the retention dept. It is proven when he noticed that his online account management is freezed and said "suspended".

So what I don't know is how do you guys get to talk to the Retention dept? He asked and he wasn't given the Retention Dept. Would talking to the Chinese speaking line make a difference? He mentioned that he does speak English and would like to speak to Retention.

Now more of this story. I noticed the Chinese Fairchild channel is now only $9. since Jan 1, 2009, and even combo w/ Talent is $10., while he pays $15. for "Fairchild". He phoned up today asking if he can get the Fairchild for $9., he was told no. Rep said that it was only for new customers, and the price will go back up to $15. after the customer's contract is up. But I didn't see it anywhere that it was only a promo pricing on the flyer I got.

Tried using chat. Must have gotten an onery agent. I ended up cancelling. Wondering if they will call to see if they can sway me back.

Just called in as our 2 yr contract is up in 2 months to see what the retention dept can do and came through as listed above new 1 yr contract (effective today) swap to a new 9242 with free install and 20% off for the term.

Thanks guys!

first they offered 10% off all programming. I said the problem was the equipment. He then came back with a $10 receiver credit for a year. I'd go back for a $20 receiver credit so that I could go w HDPVR. I'm close to moving to cable with an incentive offer from them.

If you don't mind me asking, how did the installer connect both hdtvs to the one receiver? I am thinking of possibly the same idea.

Thanks

I got a 'free' upgrade from a 5900 to a 9242. On a 2 year contract they gave me a one time credit of $240 and continue to bill me $20 a month. Is this usual, and why do they do this?

The 9242 has dual tunners; and as the rooms are side by side he ran a/v cable through the wall that divides them to the other TV (a small 15' LCD 720p). The 9242 comes with 2 remotes that are UHF (They will go through walls). My room's TV is connected by component (37' LCD 1080i). As I said before, I am amazed of the commitment of Bell to myself to keep me as a customer; don't know if it was just my luck, but they treated me with exceptional customer service... for now I'm recommending Bell to all my friends, 2 of them already have made a choice to switch from Shawdys low sound/video quality.

Have you been with them a long time, have they made any billing mistakes, Tell them you will upgrade to a HDPVR for 12 months rent and a 10% programing credit on a two year contract.

If you don't want to give up your credit card they will let you put the deposit on your phone bill. (Strange but true)

I found that out by reading up. However, Bell stores have no stock of the PVR, the switches, nor the LNBFs. They don't know when and if things are being shipped. Explain they're still "wiped out" from Boxing Day sales. Kid on phone says I can get the 6131 (or whatever the new ones are) and hook up external drives for a PVR function. "Great" I think, only to find out it's not a working port, USB2 nor Ethernet...they both are inactive until late 2009.

Can you imagine running your business and launching a new product with no stock? Local distributors that are large say they are no longer allowed to carry dishes or LNBFs. Can't order on the Internet because of lack of parts offered. No Internet support. A call to skydish produced the usual "can't help you there", use "chat" Chat is turned off or not working. Email contact turns up "instant survey" but no email link.

here's a hint for Bell: close your doors, send everyone home. Service won't be affected in the least, and payroll will shrink.

How do these maroons stay in business?

Time to hook up the competitor's equipment.

Argh!

Jim
