Finally called Bell today to cancel my service and was offered:

9242 rental for one year at no charge
free installation
30% discount on monthly bill

When I told the rep that I was offered 2 years from rental of an HD-PVR from Rogers, she said, "call us in one year and we'll see what we can do"

I renewed.

:p

I don't profess to know much about expressvu but I know I experienced the same thing as darz when I got my 6141. Expressvu had to authorize/register/hit do something that fixed the do not find a signal message. A coincidence the receiver goes at the same time of suspension, maybe.

Even if they're moving out of the country? That seems kind of impractical. Is the retention department open 24/7? If not, why would Bell make customers call them back and go through a hassle if they're leaving the country with no chance to be "saved" as customers?

i think rogers is selling their hd pvr for $250. try that.

i just got a free hd receiver (non pvr) from bell for 1 yr. i bought a new tv though.

When a client says that he has an appointement with another compagny, the client still have the 30 days notice to give...and they will still try to give him a retention offer that will satisfy him and make him stay. An appoitement is always cancellable...

To be able to receive boxes the equipement has to be diabled on your account or if you want to return all the equipement the account has to be closed. The will send you boxes by Purolator with adress sticker. You put the receiver in, call back Purolator, or make the guy wait when he delivers the box, put the receiver in, stick the sticker on the box and you're all set.

Mr Hud,

Did you talk to retentions or a regular agent?

Seems like a regular agent wouldn't do anything for me.

I did get the Shaw deal (swap Sat receiver for HD PVR) in February; and got 2 months free worth of their UBBERLY CRAPPY service. I'm cancelling Shaw cable service this week though; I'd be pissed if I have had to pay Shawdy these 2 months. IMHO Shaw has the worst signal of any TV provider.
That's another reason Bell will give retention gifts to current suscriber under a contract (like I said before); a new Shaw HD PVR (what I got from them) is worth $650.00 at FS or BB; that is more goodies than a $300 cancellation fee.

I called cancellations for win back program old cutsomer. They forward my info to Loyalty care team to call back. Called back with the offer the first time the rep asked me what I wanted for equipment and programing. Only one year comitment on my part. Just be nice and stright forward to the rep.

I have the Shaw HD service with Moto 6416 III and BellTV with 9200.

Picture quality in Calgary seems much better on the 9200.
Menus and guide seem better on the 9200 (HD and more descriptive)
Remote is better on the 9200
9200 seems faster when moving through the interface
9200 seems to store more content
9200 organizes content better with its folders

But I really like having basic cable for extra rooms... but I know that's a weak reason to stay given the above points.

I guess I can get $3 SD box rentals.

I was offered 6 months at 50% or 12 months at 30% off. And a free HDPVR for the same length of time.

I'll ask them for 40% off programming for a year, a free 9242 rental and some free content.

I got a card from Shaw offering trade in and called Bell and got $300 off a 9242 and then free install and 40% off programming for 12 months.

Figured it worked out to $1050 savings to $700 with shaw ( and a referbished HD PVR ) .... so happy with what I got and learning what to try get in here.

I recently spoke with Retentions as my contract was ending in 1 week. ROgers was offering 2 free hd pvrs if i trade in my equipment.

So i called in to retentions, told them the deal, end result. A free HD PVR for 12 months. I'm happy. We'll worry about the 2nd free year next year.

The way i figure it, do they wanna lose $70 a month from me or comp a $20 receiver. All business sense would say the latter.

That is only true if you can pay off your credit card (if charged to it) before you start paying interest on it. You can't transfer bell credits to your credit card.

Things might have changed, but when I worked there India was takingonly tech calls.

The retention centers were in Montreal and Toronto

To avoid getting to the India call center justselect French when they ask the language...none of the calls were you select Frech are transfered to India since Indians only take English calls. All Canadian agents have to be bilingual to work at EV, therefore the agent will be able to answer you in English. This is the way that it was working a dfew months ago when I was there...things might have changed in the meantime, I appologise in advance

I called Bell yesterday to inquire on a better deal. I've been with them for about 4 years, and thus no longer have a commitment. I got what I think is a pretty sweet deal - for essentially $80 a month I am getting the Digital Extra bundle along with LeafsTV, Setanta and Dish Care. The rep that I spoke with was fantastic and we had a great conversation about things. I wasn't interested in leaving BellTV, and she wasn't interested in letting me go as a customer, so we both felt that this was a good deal for both parties.

I'm not obligated to purchase the EHD I mentioned above, in fact I still haven't picked it up for $199, but I will. I paid $36 for my HD receiver after the half off and 2 months free the retention department gave me.

As for the price going way up for everyone else because of us savvy customers who know how to pass the word, buyer beware (and congratulations!) to you.

It depends a little on the margins, doesn't it? If your contract at work is up for renewal and you wanted $45k/yr, would you happily accept $35k/yr to keep your boss happy?

Deals are great to get, don't get me wrong. But I sometimes worry about the folks always expecting a "sweetheart deal" and prepared to switch every year or two to another provider as a "new customer". The main issue is getting good value for what you do purchase. Your mileage may vary.

EV was good value for the money when I originally subbed. With the recent price hikes and the growing number of channels MIA it is not looking as good. So... Do I ditch the dish and get the extra channels I want for about the same price? It is starting to look like a reasonable option.

I found this forum on a Google search and thanks very much for that advice on the retention deal. I was NOT going to pay full price on a receiver when new customers get half off. So I called them and got the half price deal from the loyalty department. The CSR I spoke with was by far and away the most techinically knowledgable and friendly and spoke English well that I have talked to.

But check this out:

I originally wanted the HD PVR, but after learning that the second TV wouldn't get the HD signal and that I would have to run a second line from the dish (my first line is already hidden in the walls) and the other cumbersome cabling issues that go with connecting it, I got a 6141.

Long story short, Bell just yesterday came out with an External Hard Drive (see http://www.bell.ca/shopping/PrsShpTv_DTH_BestHDPVR.page?EXT=XVU_SA_200808008_EHD_LC_supppg) that will seamlessly turn the 6141 into a PVR receiver. Even though link above does market the EHD as an addon to the 9242, the EHD also works in the 6141. I paid $235 for the receiver and the EHD, which is less than the half price deal for the HD PVR.

Thanks again for this forum. I was getting pretty sick of scouring craigslist for a deal on HD PVR's.
