New hardware from EV is a loss leader. It is usually sold at or below cost in order to attract customers. It is usually sold at the same price for several years. There are a couple of reasons for that. One is to recoup losses from earlier sales. The other is because EV receivers are manufactured on large production runs well ahead of time and costs reflect actual costs some months or years in the past. Yet another reason is that this is a closed, non-competitive market. If there is no competition, there is no reason to lower prices. The only time I have seen EV reduce receiver prices is shortly after a better receiver is introduced. Even then, the price reduction was not that significant.

One thing I will say about CRTC regulation regarding retention incentives:

If you're trying to see what kind of deal they'll offer you as opposed to the competition, it's fine to say you're thinking about another company, but do not say you already have an appointment with another provider. Doing so legally obligates the company to terminate your service and offer you no deals. I've heard people say "I already have an appointment with company abc, now give me a reason to cancel it", which is the worst thing you can possibly say if you want a deal.

>The chap was very helpful. I mentioned we are receiving all these "switch >offers" and what could he do for us. I received:
>
>2 year no charge rental of a 6141 receiver plus free install (no $100 payment)
>40% off our current programming charges (7 packages + HD I think)

I think I'll give it a go. Did you call their main number and then ask for the Retentions department?

An update to my previous post...

The installer showed up yesterday and told me he doesn't have any of the new 9241 receivers yet and asked me if I would like the 9242 instead. :D
Not trying to get too excited I told him sure why not since he didn't have any of the new ones yet. (Considering the 9242 was the receiver I wanted in the first place, this just put the icing on the cake)

So my retention deal I received was for the 9242 receiver for $499 plus a $250 credit on my account and 20% off on my programming for a year.

I think Shaw has an even better offer. They will give you a HD PVR for your old HD satellite receiver. It's yours to keep, not a rental.

The Rogers "ditch the dish" offer is really worth nothing in the long run. Chances are the receivers I currently own will last another 2 years or longer. EV made me a better offer than Rogers did anyway. They had too because I was about to switch.

This has been discused several times in the past.

The reason they cannot sell you the Rental receiver is because it does NOT belong to Bell but a third party company. They have never sold Rentals to customers to my knowledge for this very reason.

I even wonder if the Rental returns become the refurbs that we all get when we have problems with our receivers, it would make sense to me.

I Have been with BEV for years, Was going to go with rogers and take there ditch the dish offer. But in the long haul it would be more money for me to get most of the HD channels.(must buy the vip package $56 or so then another $7 or $8 for there hd extras package. I only get the digital standard package with BEV. They gave me a 6100 HD reciever no charge for a year and 6 months of there HD package free. Not sure if this was the standard deal or not, but I took it and had to accept a one year contract( was month to month). I love the HD, Hope BEV adds more !

I don't see why it would take that long for the credit to show up ... the $300 credit for the 9242 was on my very next bill.

However the $75 installation credit wasn't. Fortunately when I was going through retentions process I wrote everything down including the CSR's name, so when I saw the $75 credit wasn't there I did an online chat session to get it back. I took screencaps of my online chat too, so if they screw it up a second time I have it in writing ;)

****, i have been dealing with BELL on my 40% off. 2 bills now and still no credit. Called this week and they said for sure on the next bill.

So, watch to make sure you get your 30%.... as i hear they offer it but try to see if people do not notice that it has been applied.

12 months of 40%... is something I will notice if it is not happening.

He might have gave you the retention center number...it's probably a smaller departement where everybody knows each other just like SAT was when I worked there. Agent could therefore transfer you to him whithout, like he said going throught the usual customer service center

When you goto cancel make sure you talk to one of the canadian call centers, if you get india I think they will just cancel you. I think you only get india after regular hours though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just bought a new 60" Pioneer Kuro Elite Tv and I'm looking for a another HD receiver from Bell. I have been with Bell for more than 12 years and currently not under any contracts.

I logged onto myBell account and found the following renewal offer if I sign for 2 years:

25 % discount on retail price of a receiver -
Up to $60 PPV credit to be used over the 2 yr period
One time bill credit of $40

I plan on getting the 6131 receiver or 6141 when the price drops to $199 this thursday. But I also plan on calling Bell to see if I would get a better offer. Based on the above, I would get $150 as incentives....

Has anyone gotten a better deal when buying the 6141 receiver? I don't want to sign up for 2 years... 1 yr is fine. What should I go for?

Just got off the phone...hour long convo (thats a lie, i got off the phone and my mom made me shovel 2 feet of snow)

well if u look at the offer from bell i had, i didn't get that exactly but still a good package.

My current bill is $109/month which included 3 or 4 indian channels my parents watch.

recieved upgrade from my HD to PVR 9442 for one year free (so savings of my rental of $10/month)

than 40% off my programing for one year so my total bill drops from 109/month with 1 HD 1 standerd to $54 + Tax for one year for PVR HD and one standerd for one year
-probably gonna go do the same thing next year for my parents

So my programing is basic, 5 themes, HD and indian channels (which is $30 for4 normally) for $54 month plus tax for 1 year.

one time $50credit (we'll see if i ever get it)

Talked to 3 people, first girl was really cool but said she didnt have authority to give me more. Just explained what i had offered from cogeco she tried to match. Transfered me to guy who gave me this deal pretty quickly.
than back to a guy in retentions who gave just signed me up!!

At least i did something productive this snow day!!

Thanks, pinza. Now I wonder what that third party company is. Not likely we can deal directly with it.

I wrote:

I'll call when I want to upgrade to HD later this year. I can't believe that they treat potential customers better than customers they have had for years. The current deal for new customers is $400 off an 9242 and free install, so I 'll expect at least that much.

Well, the current deal for new customers is not quite as good: half price, so $300 off a 9242. Still, they gave it to this old customers when I asked for it, along with free install. I did not threaten to quit, just asked for the same price they gave non-customers.
