...feel lonely? Being a single, is it appropriate to let someone of different sex know that you feel lonely, not with a sexual interest.

What the other party will think?
 
depends how you phrase it I suppose. If they have feelings for you they may see as a hint that you like them, if they dislike you they might think you are desperate and/or a loner and if they are close friends they will probably wonder if you are okay and need comforting.
