beginner photography question?

hi, i have just started photography i have the lumix g1, its great :) and i want to do a shot of met stood in a crowd, but in the picture i will be stood still and the people moving past will be blurred. what settings should i use, should i adjust the shutter speed, if so what would you set it at, and do you have any other tips i should take before doing this shot. Cheers!
 
What you do see, is experiment. Try combinations of all shutter speeds, apertures, ASA numbers and focussing. Also use a tripod when taking telephoto shots or rest the camera on a wall or firm support. That way, you will lean for yourself and be confident that you can cover any situation.
The beauty of a digital camera is that you can take as many trial shots as you like. When I started it was film negatives and costly.

You might need to do multiple shots for this picture. But like Harriet said, Experiment! Set the camera to take a long exposure shot (maybe 2 seconds, tops 3), be sure it's on a tripod and focused on you, and that you don't move at all while it is taking the picture.
 
go somewhere where their are people and its low light - light a railway subway perhaps,

use iso 100, f22 or close to it, a shutter of at least one second - two being better (get the camera manual out, goto youtube look up long exposure photography, look up camera control, and all other good things like that)


if you wish to do the above in bright daylight then you will need a ND fliter

oh and a tripod is a must, also using the timer to fire the shutter might be an idea also
 
Your camera has both aperture and shutter speed priority modes.

That means under the right lighting conditions, you can use timed shutter speeds as long as 60 seconds. Depending upon the amount of light, you may need to screw a ND filter on the end of your lens

You will have better success if you mount your camera on a tripod and use a low ISO, like 100. Avoid "auto"
