I think it will work for you although it has lower end components that will last for a time, make sure you are purchasing it from a bike specific store so you get some kind of service plan to go with the bike. You don't seem heavy for your height so that will not be an issue no matter what brand you ultimately end up with. I recommend the GT bike to all of the "larger" riders I encounter. There are many brands to choose from out there, don't let Price be the #1 denominator in choosing a bike for your commute! Bob A is correct in saying you do not want a mtn bike for your commuting, it will be cumbersome on you and the GT will give you the versatility you require too!
