Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset

'before sunset' is one of my favorite films of 2004.....i was lucky enough to have seen it in a theater..........now maybe more of the people who post to this forum will be able to see this wonderful film now that's available on dvd........


i thought the ending was quite appropriate.....but when it ended i thought...."no that's not right....what happens next?......why did it have to end so soon........give me more, more and more".........to be continued????

i would rate 'before sunset' with
:star::star::star::star::star: for meaningful dialouge told in an adult manner..............
 
Definitely rent it.

Go into it with an open mind in that it IS a slow film in that it literally is about two people meeting on a train and spending the day in Vienna before the next train comes in.

There's no chases, no explosions, no mysteries, no spies or foriegn intrigue -- Things usually associated with movies that take place in Europe -- But that is precisely WHY it is such a GOOD film.

Richard Linkleter wrote and directed the film with his wife, so this is probably how those two met (or maybe their parents)...

But pay close attention to the dialogue as it doesn't sound like "witty" dialogue that most films have, but REAL things people in their 20s say and how they say them and you WILL see a bit of yourself in either of the two characters (if not both) which is exactly why it has such a cult following among those who want substance in their filmgoing experience :D
 
I love these films pretty equally. :) The first one is joyous, looser and carefree--which fits with the stage Jesse and Celine were at their lives. Before Sunset, on the other hand, is more thoughtful and filled with a greater sense of urgency/poignancy. The ending of Before Sunset is PERFECT.

I love the chemistry between Ethan and Julie. The films are my idea of romantic fantasy. I would love to be able to connect with someone on the level that they do. They really listen, engage and challenge one another. To me that's an expression of love more sincere than what we typically see in more mainstream films.

It's out on DVD!? Dude, I HAVE to get it!

...but then again that's what I said with the last three movies that I said that I'd do it. Still, concerted effort to go and actually buy this movie, for I will enjoy it greatly I think. :)

HEE! What a good movie.
 
I sitll haven't seen them but I plan to at some point. I hear the first is better, though. :)
 
AuburnGrad- Thats probaly what I will end up doing. I usually wait for movies to come out on dvd to watch a home
 
I still need to watch the first. Sigh.

Everyone who's seen it seems to be raving about it though....so that just makes it worse.

But since it is now on DVD, I thought I would start a thread.

One word: Phenomenal.

If you liked the first "Before Sunrise" you're really going to like this installment.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy give stellar performances as they reprise their roles as Jesse and Celine... But now, with real life history (ten years) having past both on and off screen that has shaped how their characters have turned out since their first encounter in Vienna during the Summer of '94.

What I really like about the film is the fact that director Richard Linklater (who helmed the first film) really allowed his characters to age, but at the same time, remain who they were in the first film.

The discussions they have this time around (while walking around Celine's Paris neighborhood) are just as wordy and intellectual as ever... But they are tempered with the realities of how life changes your outlook when you are young from widly idealistic to a more refined cynacism as you mature... But always with a sense of enduring optimism that lies just beneath the surface, no matter how hard life gets and how much we think we loose the dreams of youth.

The film also addresses the core idea that Jesse and Celine are/were meant to be together... Even going as far as to answer some of the questions that were left after the first one as to whether or not Jesse or Celine actually returned six months later as they promised each other at the end of the first film.

A lot of films become known as the defining film for a generation such as "Fight Club" for the children of the '80s and "Garden State" for Generation Y.

"Before Sunset" best fits those of us who are in our 30s (Generation X) and are still wondering "What's it [life] all about?" and asking if things are going to get better than this. The answer: Maybe they don't have to as long as we find the one person who we're meant to be with and share this long journey that we're all on that we call life.

(half a star taken off for the ending which may disappoint some, but that is actually fitting given the history of the first film).
 
I remember renting Before Sunrise shortly after it was released on video, and my roommate found it a complete bore. I loved it, though, because there was a substance there lacking in most films.

I agree, some movies are meant for dvd. As much as I can't wait to see Before Sunset, I think I will wait for its dvd release. I want to watch this film in the privacy of my home where I can concentrate and give myself fully to the characters' thoughts.
 
Okay, this film is officially one of my all time favourites. I have loved before sunrise for so many years and this follow up was so beautifully made. I came out of the cinema not knowing whether to laugh or cry. It was just so touching. Perfect.
 
"Before Sunrise" was ground breaking in not the concept (two people spending an entire day together talking about life), but the actual SUBSTANCE and the things the characters said in terms of the world around them:

They (Celine and Jesse) predicted the rise of "reality TV"; they touched on how a lot of Generation X and Y feel isolated and like they are ghosts in this world "practicing" for their "real lives" in another one; They embodied the feeling of defining ones life based on who you want to be and not what has come before, I.E. parental wishes; They touched on the universal fears of never really "growing up" internally or even worse, wasting one's entire life in the vain pursuit of "happiness", etc, etc.

Other films have tried to say what Before Sunrise did... But never did it in such a universal or "matter of fact" way, and/or never done it with the dignity that Before Sunrise's explorations did (films about Gen X/Y tend to always be superficial and de-evolve into thinly disguised and predictable romantic comedies, I.E. Reality Bites; Dazed and Confused; etc).

However, the problem is, as Ethan Hawke so eloquently stated, that's NOT what a majority of people go to the movies for (internal exploration of one's self and the world they live in)...

And I will add, especially the summer blockbusters that are geared toward more escapist and fanciful stories like "Spider Man II" and "The Day After Tomorrow".

So...

I doubt Before Sunset is going to break the top 5 and if it does, the later part of the top five (number five to be exact) and disappear about a week later...

But that's just fine with me :)

I think some movies are MEANT for DVD -- And I am wondering if those involved in this film originally planned for a direct-to-DVD release instead of a theatrical run -- And this is where it will gain its cult following and make MORE money than it doe its entire run -- Which is how movies are considered hits now even if they bomb at the boxoffice.

Although Ethan Hawke is winning raves for Before Sunset, the indie romance (in limited release) that he co-wrote and in which he stars, the applause is nearly being drowned out by gossip: His character's disintegrating marriage, wags suggest, mirrors the 33-year-old's real-life bust-up with wife Uma Thurman. Is it true? The sometime author prefers to keep us guessing.
"I'll play many men in my life with struggling marriages," insists the leading man, who also teamed with Julie Delpy for Before Sunrise, the chatty sleeper from which the new picture was drawn. "I'll play many men who are happily married, too, and if people want to read into that, I hope that it fuels [the buzz for the film] in a positive way. [The story line] is not made more interesting or less interesting by any parallels to me.

"But," he concedes, "I like what Julie has said. [She joked] that I'm such a Method actor that I deliberately destroyed my marriage!"

Some Hollywood hunks would be appalled by a castmate who so freely poked fun at their private lives. But Hawke knew what he was getting in the French femme fatale. "Julie's a pain in the [bleep]," he laughs, adding that during the collaborative screenwriting process with director Richard Linklater, she let him know when his ideas for his screen counterpart stank. "[She'd] tell me pretty clearly, 'If you say that, you will be a pig. Your film will be terrible.'"
However, "We wouldn't have obviously done it a second time if we didn't love [writing together]," he goes on. "For whatever reason, it works out easy. Everybody kind of has their role."

Based on the flick's reviews, glowing as they are, the role the audience must play is that of a bunch of people who aren't snoring. Even Hawke laments that, on paper, the plot
 
I've been really wanting to see this movie, Before Sunrise was very interesting, I mean how upclose&personal could acting be more than in these two roles? It's brilliant :cool:
 
You don't need to see "Before Sunrise". I haven't seen it years, and "Before Sunset" stood very well on it's own.
 
I loved before sunrise and am so very, very happy about Before Sunset. It has had wonderful reviews (not that that really matters) but I just can't wait
 
"what if you had a second chance with the one that got away?"

did anyone else see a movie called 'before sunrise'?.....i'd often wondered if "jesse" and "celine" would ever reunite.....now i'll have the chance to find out in.....'before sunset'....opening friday in limited release, then a wider release.........
