Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. Better in the sense that the discussion between the characters is truly fresh and they talk of things strangers talk about. You can remember conversations you've had that were JUST like that. Save for the whole romatic stuff. ;) Or maybe with. Haha.

But Before Sunset one is more elegant, more grounded. The characters aren't strangers anymore because the met and fell in love 10 years earlier but they ARE strangers all over again because hell, it's been 10 years! They're no longer who they used to be, which makes it twice mysterious since they didn't know each other well and yet they have to deal with who they became.

They're more mature, more cautious, less idealistic, more cynical but still charmed with each other.

And the ending............ Ohhh, that ending is one for the ages. :sigh:

I love both films the same. I'm so happy they were made, and made so beautifully.

I enjoy the ambiguity. It's pure torture but with these two characters, given their history, a clear answer would be both disappointing and sort of too simple.

They have a complex relationship because they haven't experienced each other fully. They might as well be strangers, maybe they like being strangers. Maybe that's why it's so fascinating to them and to us. Jesse's son does complicate things because it's no longer about romance, it's about real responsibility that can't be forgotten about in the name of love. These movies are so great. :sigh:

I saw it in the theater and thought it was just wonderful. I'm so glad it's out on DVD.

I've heard a lot about these movies, and I'm a romantic at heart, so sooner or later, I'll watch them :)

Thank you everybody for the comments :D

Before Sunset seems shorter than Before Sunrise because it is.

The actual film, Before Sunset, takes place in 89 minutes of real time. That is, the time frame the story takes place in is how long the movie is. It is actually 85 minutes + four minutes of credits so it is much shorter than Before Sunrise which is 105 minutes (1 hour and 45 minutes) in length.

.....

As for a sequel, or the final installment of the trilogy... The more time that passes the better as Ethan/Jesse, Julie/Celine are basically living out the experiences which will be put in the final installment since Ethan is now divorced (from Uma Thurman) and has a two children with her while Julie Delphi is still single like Celine... But both Ethan and Julie were last heard going out with each other in real life shortly before the last Oscars. Whether they are still together or not is precisely why these films are so facinating because they are basically psuedo-docudramas considering Richard Linkleter collaborates with both Ethan and Julie whenever they write the script for the next installment. In fact, Ethan and Julie were up for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay (original) for Before Sunset.

One of my fave movie of all the time was Before Sunrise, i can't wait watching before sunset, and i can't wait come out here in italy, anyway is it good as the sunrise?

I'm with you Judy. I love both pretty equally as well. I wasn't sure how the 2nd one would compare to the first one, but surprisingly it was really great in a totally different way from the first one. I think the roles were kind of reversed in the 2nd one which made it fascinating.

I've just seen a week ago, 'cause in italy went out last week, and all i have to say is that it was perfect, i waited 9 years for watching a sequel, i've seen Before Sunrise like hundred times and i always thought about "what a about a sequel" and then 9 years after here it is, oh my gosh, watching the trailer i had high expectative but not as much the movie was, it was perfect, and i loooooved every single part of it, and what about the finale? Perfect!!

I love those movies. The soundtrack is also amazing. Especially "Waltz for a night" by Julie Delpy.
I loved the discussings in the second movie and the ending is great. That's all we wanted.

The movies are realistic and there are real conversations in them. It is not all artificial.

Oh so I watched it, and you're right, it's fantastic :) I'm sure it'd've been better if I had watched Before Sunrise before that, but I knew enough background to know what's roughly going on. There isn't that much reference to the first. I like the dialogue. Ethan and Julie have a nice chemistry :)

Right. So I should go see it in the theatres? Fantastic :) I just need to find someone to accompany me, my mom doesn't like me going to watch alone. Hmm. It'd be best if I could watch it in this order, right?: Before Sunset in theatre, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset again

I have to get this and "Before Sunrise" on DVD. Sounds like a great movie. I will most defintely check this movie one of these days after reading these positive reviews. Thanks so much for the reviews UnsilentMajority and mukooh. :D

I'm watching Before Sunrise tonight with a bunch of my friends. I know it's not a party kind of movie, but my friends are intelligent enough to be able to deal with it...I hope. Eh. And then I'm watching Before Sunset this Saturday. This is gonna rock. :)

Hey,

I saw Before Sunset at the theater and I loved it so much that I saw it twice. Jesse and Celine here are not the same characters as they were in Before Sunrise. They're of course they're more mature (whatever that means), jaded blach. But the story revolves around missed oportunities and to the two of them the other other is the one that got away.

I don't want to give too much about the movie because I'd rather people watch (AT THE MOVIES!!) instead of waiting to rent it. Although I can understand since I had to go to New York to see it since every movie here was playing Spiderman 2, which is a great movie too.

The ending to the movie though snuck up on me though. It's one of those endings like the first one when I went that's it! But it does grow on you. It's wonderfully understated. I hope they return to these characters later on I heard that rumor. It would be interesting to see where they would take it.

Also I made a site dedicated to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Please visit it at Before the Sun

later :) kat

Is that not the best ending ever?? She's dancing to this wonderful jazzy music, he's sitting down in the couch, totally unable to leave her again, "baby, you are going to miss your plane...." Fades to black!

Aghhhh. Brilliant!

Hm, in my head he called his wife, told her he needed "time" ;) He spent a few weeks with Celine figuring his life out and of course, he stayed with her after all. Make believe is a beautiful thing.

This is the key to these films.

A lot of movies, romantic or not, often force contrived dialogue simply to move the story forward. In Before Sunrise/Sunset, the dialogue IS the story.

The deeper reason this is the writers -- Both Ethan Hawke and Juli Delphi helped co-write Before Sunset with Richard Linklater -- Take topics EVERYONE can relate to (or will at some point in their life) and present varied, universal points of view.

For instance, the whole conversation in the cab on the way to Celine's house where she breaks down.

It seems cliched at first -- No one loves her; She's the cynical ex-girlfriend guys never ask to marry -- But there is a huge part of this that anyone, both male AND female can relate to because no matter what you do (or will at some point) there will come a time when you feel no one loves you and more importantly, you are the only one who is going through these kinds of feelings (which is wrong). This is a universal "life moment" that reaches across racial, ethnic, religious, gender, societal and cultral boundries and speaks to people as human beings and is part of the human condition.

This, being able to choose the most universal AND age-relevant conversations for the film(s), is what I admire most about this series. As stated, other films try and pull this off, but they end up sounding contrived and as if they are trying to hard to be "deep" and "meaningful" whereas Before Sunrise/Sunset it comes naturally and the films are better for it.
