Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset

I had to search through the "archives" to find this thread, but I'm more than happy to resuscitate it. :)

I remember seeing Before Sunrise years ago but I think I was simply too young to appreciate it. It moved so slowly, and at the time (16-17?) I just couldn't relate.

However, my older brother immediately loved Before Sunrise, and since Before Sunset had gotten such glowing reviews, he encouraged me to watch the movies. What a difference 10 years makes! I fell in love with the characters and the conversations were so realistic, intelligent and insightful. (Hearing them talk about reality TV was funny!) Before Sunrise felt like a realistic romantic fantasy.

Before Sunset was even better, IMO. They still felt like the same Jesse and Celine, only wiser and more world weary. They've made significant choices in their lives, and could draw more closely onto personal experience. The dialogue felt more natural (probably b/c Ethan and Julie shared the writing credits with Richard Linklater), as did the acting. As a person now in her late 20s, I could relate to the sense of mised opportunities and what ifs. And the ending was PERFECT.

Before Sunset is the best movie I had seen in quite awhile. It was romantic but far above "romantic comedies" (and I watch those too). I really appreciated that it has personal significance for Julie and Ethan, and that Before Sunset was made outside of purely economical reasons.

Sorry that this is so long... ;)

Out of the two, I prefer Before Sunset. The whole concept of meeting someone on a train and having an instant connection with them is incredibly romantic to me. And then to find out that one of them didn't show up six months later and to see how their lives turned out was brilliant on the part of the director, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy. One of my favorite scenes is when Jesse says to Celine on the Seine (I think that is the river the boat was on), "Why weren't you there that day?" The anguish in his voice said it all. And then when Celine flips out on the drive back to her apartment was perfect. For the entire film, she had been very carefree and happy, so it was refreshing to see something else from her. I read somewhere that there was talk about a possible third installment of the film. Has anyone else heard this?

I love these movies, and I always have a hard time explaining why. But I love their chemistry, and I love how simple the script is and how it's only based on their communication. My favorite scene is probably the one in the first movie where they're in the record store, listening to that song (which I can't remember the name of at the moment) together. Love that scene.

They are just lovely!

I LOVE both "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset". Unfortunitely I couldn't see this movie in theatre back in August, but I just rented it a few night ago, and although I did like Sunrise better, this one was still beautiful and awe inspiring.

When Before Sunrise first came out, I was too young to even care about it. I was watching it for the first time a couple months ago, and thought it was one of the most original and refreshing films I've ever seen in my life. While the initial plot itself may not seem realistic (meeting an attractive stranger during a trip in a foreign country and hitting it off? Very fantasy-like, indeed.), the dialogues made both the characterizations and plot development some of the most authentic and truthful there are nowadays.

I really wish that I can see Before Sunset on the big screen, but I can't go there by myself (17 years old and still without a license.. *sigh*) and none of my friends and family members is interested.. Guess I'll have to wait until it comes on DVD. :(

The ending was absolutely mind blowing and I loved it. So simple but amazing. I just loved both movies.

After getting out of the theater I thought I was 'going to kill myself'. The ending really snuck up on me a lot...but after a few hours I realized the ending was perfect...and it is. My friend wanted to see it, so my sister and I went with her and she was really surprised too...but I think she'll grow into it.

I keep asking myself which one I like better, I'm pretty sure it was this one. I'll actually see it again in the theater. i reccomend seeing it in the theater, it's a different experience.

what do you think ... they stayed togheter this time or not? I would like to think so, it was obvious they were still in love, oh my i love this movie to death!!!

I'd argue that they pretty much are strangers. They meet, connect on an intimate level for a few hours, then they part. It's easy to talk to someone knowing that you'll never see them again; you feel less inhibited somehow. What's more interesting is whether they can bring that spark, that chemistry and nuture it into a long term relationship which is what has to be if there is a third movie, because there's Jesse's son which yeah, as Rockstar said, makes it harder for them to do things on a whim anymore. Which is part of the process of growing up, really. But I'm a romantic so I really hope that they do get together in the end :)

I love both movies, in fact I saw them for the first time on the same day, I always saw bits of the first though. I think it was a wonderful couple/friendship analysis, the script is great.

I have never seen Before Sunrise until early on this year (I was only 8 when it originally came out). When I saw it, I loved it and was thrilled to know that there was a sequel coming out later this year. I don't know why I loved it, considering I have never experienced a lot of the emotions covered by the film and its characters, but I did. When Before Sunset came out, I didn't get a chance to see it in theaters. I've been trying to see it, but when I do have the time and money (most of these times are with my friends), I ended up watching another movie because I couldn't convince my friends the brilliance of Before Sunrise. In short, I didn't see it until last night when I had some alone time at home.

I'm so glad I finally got to see it. At first, I was scared that I would be disappointed because I just loved the first one. This film was a bit slow at some points, but it was still captivating. I found myself always want to know more about these characters. The scene I loved the most has got to be when they were in the car. It was so emotional, but Ethan and Julie potrayed their characters and dialogues so naturally. The ending, the subtle self-revelation that Jesse had at the end, was a perfect touch.

GOD. That was SO intensely good. Like mukooh, I liked the sequel more than the first one. I think maybe it's because the second one was much more...sure and more confident and just more elegant than the first. The real timeness, plus the fact that they were older and just more experienced and had more time to reflect upon lost opportunities made it just better and more pressing and more lovely. The ending was AMAZING and though I've heard from some people that they thought it wasn't enough, I thought it was simple yet elegant. It worked and left the rest up to imagination. If you haven't watched this movie, WATCH IT.

More for your viewing pleasure ...

I rented this movie tonight. Loved it. I watched "Before Sunrise" about a month ago and couldn't wait until the sequel came out on DVD. The ending did kind of jar me for a minute - I didn't want it to end so soon! But I love the way Ethan and Julie portray the characters. Jesse and Celine just have a way of sucking you right in and making you want them together so badly!

Have to buy both these movies on DVD...have to.

I find both absolutely fabulous. They're so realistic, not constructeed, not like the typical love story. It's so real and you can really identify with it. Plus, fantastic acting, music, setting, light, cutting ... It's just perfect !

I found this on the movie website. I don't know how to resize it, but I thought you all might like to see it anyway. If someone can make a banar I'd gladyl add them to the opening post.

i thought it was better than 'before sunrise'....one reason being i'm a little bit older now....just like "celine" and "jesse"....more in tune to who i am, maybe not that much wiser, but perhaps a little bit more aware of the lost chances and oppurtunities of my youth.....

the other reason i liked this film so much is that it was told in "real" time with a non stop, smart and relevant dialouge between "celine" and "jesse"....

i loved the ending....i thought it was most appropriate......

"baby your going to miss your plane"

"i know".......

to be continued?

So, I don't know if I've told this story in this forum but I for the longest time, since I was like 13-14 (I'm now 21) I've had this odd obsession with Before Sunrise. But not a typical obsession.

I saw the movie once and just never forgot it, like everyday I saw the characters in my head or remembered the settings but I never watched it again. Two years ago I sat down, watched the movie and I was back in that "state"...then the news of Before Sunset shocks me.

I was in heaven. I was even nervous about watching it because it meant so much, especially that I wasn't 13 anymore, and neither were the characters in their early 20's. It was an experience, I'll tell you.

I loved the ending.. I felt cheated at first but right after I loved it. It was absolutely perfect.
