Before I look for a lawyer, I need to know what are my right for myself and

my child. I am married, with? 3 children. My oldest child was conceived with another man who i am no longer with. He is 8 years old. I had him when I was a teen and worked constantly to provide for myself and for him. His father at the time did not work, so he stayed with his father while I worked alot of the time. It was verbally agreed upon at the time that he would live with him so i can work and go to school. Under personal re-evaluation with the situation I am much more fit for my son and would like him full time but his father is immature and always puts up a fight. It was sprung on me via facebook update that his father is moving in 2 weeks and taking my son with him out of the state. I live in NJ and so does he and my son. Does any law protect me? I do not want him to leave the state with my son and I have explained this to him in a mature manner. He is doing it anyway. What can I do??? please help!!1
Like i mentioned earlier, prior to this, there were never any court appearances. Although, i was planning on filing for him full time before this happened. What can i do to prevent him from taking him out of state..i have all my rights! I am in college and both my husband and I are very stable and fit parents. :)

Without a court order, nothing prevents him from leaving the state with your son. You need to file in court to get a temporary restraining order and seek custody. Hire a lawyer BEFORE your son's father leaves the state. Things will get very complicated and very expensive once you have to cross state lines to regain custody.
