Howdy all, I'm new here. After suffering from months of heartburn during a very high stress period of my life (which added many lbs of fat as well) I ended up at a gastro's office. I had tried Prilosec OTC and had good luck reducing the symptoms but they were not fully controlled even with taking it 2x/day. After an exam the doc felt the problem was most likely esophageal spasms and prescribed amlopidine @ 10 mg along with 1x/day Prilosec. This was a miracle cure for a few years. After a year on the medications I was scoped and no damage to the stomach or espohagus was found. Lately the meRAB have decreased in effectiveness. I am so tired of daily medication (and the belching/acid taste/etc.etcetc), and I worry about the lack of stomach acid and future health problems due to long term use of Prilosec or other PPIs. I've dropped 25 lbs over the last 16 months and plan on losing another 30 lbs in 2011 to finish ditching the old spare tire.

I have attempted to wean off the Prilosec to no avail, the reflux symptoms come roaring back even if I attempt to take Pepcid AC or other H2 blockers. From reading this forum I've learned that this is typical when trying to get off of PPIs. I am seeing my regular MD next week to get a referral to a new GI doc. Also my latest attempt with Pepcid left me crawling back to Prilosec and wow am I feeling generally depressed and am really unproductive at work. ugh.

Can anyone give me some tips as to what I should discuss with the new GI doc?

I've been taking PPI's now for almost 16 years. Yes, you will get rebound acid when you come off of a PPI. Are you looking to have surgery for a more long-term fix?
