I wonder why this is such an underrated Disney film? I personally prefer it to Mary Poppins, always did and always will. Great songs and child actors + Angela Lansbury can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.

"Bobbing along singing a song at the bottom of the beautiful briney sea" :)

I've been thinking about this film the past couple of days, after having a stroll down Portobello road :D

I love this film, one of my favourite disney films, you can't beat the football match

Best disney film ever although when i mention it to people they have never heard of it!!

think i still remember how all the spells go!

This kiRAB in this are much more annoying than those in Mary Poppins.

Still not as annoying as the two screaming brats in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, mind.

Although I do love this film I think part of the reason it isn't more loved is because of the songs. There aren't really any classics or stand outs in there with the possible exception of Portobello Road.

It's a decent enough albeit quite glum story, some nice animation and some good performances (although I agree the kiRAB are annoying). But there's just something missing from it that is usually present with Disney films. For me it's definitely the music. And Bruce Forsythe.

How can you not love a film where Angela Lansbury and some empty suits of armour defeat the Nazis.
And how can you not love the songs - Eglantine, Beautiful Brimy Sea and The Age of Not Believing.
Not to forget that Bruce Forsyth is in it as well.

I saw this at the pictures with my Mum. God it was embarrassing when the little boy person shouted out - i've got a knob in my pocket!

I find it a bit 'blowsy', especially the songs - the construction and lyrics are a bit bombastic and incommodious, whereas in Mary Poppins the songs seem to work more musically 'naturally', and feel less 'forced'

I've got my vhs of it in the wardrobe, probably rubbish ruined quality now as we watched the tape A LOT in the past, one of our favourites in the family.

Just dug out my US R1 dvd of the film as Disney UK often don't put much effort into a lot of their releases.
Not sure if there are extras on the UK disc but the US one features:

The Worm Turns Animated Short (likely to be the short that played with the film on its cinema release)
Vanishing Private -Donald Duck
Featurette with the Sherman Brothers who wrote the songs aswell as Angela Lansbury which includes behind the scenes footage showing clips of scenes with standins
A Step In the Right Direction - deleted song
B&B Scrapbook- 3 galleries of concept art, aRAB etc
Never Before Seen Recording Session with David Tomlinson for Portobello Road.- perfect quality so most likely filmed for The Wonderful World of Disney to promote the film

When the film was released nearly a half hour was chopped out to reduce the running time . Most of the footage is restored for the anniversary dvd but some has the picture missing and is reconstructed on the bonus features.

The film last 139 minutes which should equate to about 134 minutes on the UK dvd due to the PAL/NTSC difference

Rather alarmingly the Amazon listing for last years dvd re-release shows the running time as 112 minutes.
A review by a Play.com buyer confirms this is true although the 2001 release is the longer version
