Be Kind Rewind

Just saw it (Brentford's arthouse cinema first with the new releases!) and yes, it was touching but I thought it didn't really have an ending. The story is very mainstream Hollywood, it's told in an offbeat, quirky way but I had hoped there would be some kind of conclusion to it even if it didn't have a predictable happy ending.

I think Gondry over-reached himself with this film. The best bits were the little surreal touches like the flicker when magnetised Jerry walks into the store, or the magnetic urine attracting debris as it flowed away. Maybe the director wanted to say something about the power of cinema and the importance of telling a good story, but I thought the conventional plot got in the way. And as others have said, the music was intrusive - even if Michel Gondry played the drums!

I can't view that clip for some reason but I used to watch The Amanda Show all the time - is it referring to the BlockBlister sketches? If so, I can see the similarities but the family didn't erase tapes and make new ones, there wasn't a reason given why they sold their own instead of the 'normal' versions.

I guess so, the clip only shows bits from the show in which customers are complaining about their rented videos which features Bynes and supposedly her brother acting as if they are the movies stars in 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Titanic', etc.

I guess the similarities between 'Be Kind' and 'Amanda Show' only appear in the sketches. The other things are perhaps 100% original. Won't know for sure. :p

Yes, it's similar. I'm sure other people have had the same idea too. I suppose that a film director who's fascinated by the workings of the human imagination might have been interested in these sketches and how the idea could be incorporated into a film about how a community comes together to celebrate its own imagined history. But I don't think the Amanda Show was about that.
