BBC2 Horror Double Bill

Thanks, I think I've seen this in HMV but to be honest I don't want to have to buy these movies, I'd just love to see them on the telly! ;)

Oh, and The Lost Continent is such a weird but entertaining movie!! I'd forgotten I saw that one...

Not sure you would say the same if you saw those 40 year old plays again today but you do have the chance as there is a vastly over priced boxset of the few remaining episodes available exclusively from Networks own website
Most were wiped

Funnily enough, so do I but my definition of best puts "uncut" in first place. Taken that, the Film4 print is the best available. Where, like VOH, there are two DVRAB available (high quality but cut, lower quality but uncut), I found myself always choosing the uncut disc.

It's on sale today in Amazon Marketplace for

The BBC 2 double bills often included real oddities like Superbeast (1972) starring Antoinette Bower which featured realistic looking autopsy footage ! (Or it seemed so at the time!)

My ultimate job would be some rich but lazy film fan making me director of programmes on a Genre-based film channel!

Endless fun :)

There is no Region 1 boxset that copies the UK one .
But there are more Amicus films out in the US .
Lee/Cushing/Price classic Scream and Scream Again for starters , aswell as many of the Price/Corman/Poe/AIP movies .

Look for the Midnite Movies label

Who remembers the old BBC2 Horror Double Bills in the 70's and 80's?
Classic horror films screened every week over the Summer when I was a kid!
But where are all the old black and white Universal and RKO films on tv now?
Where are the old Hammer, Amicus and AIP horror and monster movies? They are nowhere to be found on British television and not everyone can afford to run out and buy them on dvd!
A lot of young people haven't even heard of them!

Which is why I was hoping that you guys in particular with your love and knowledge of classic British TV might be willing to join our campaign to get classic horror movies back on the BBC?

Or if you just want to sign the petition, here's the link:

I'd love it if you could share your memories of the old BBC2 Saturday night Horror Double Bills. Thanks!! :)

And take away the fun of imagining what's happening in the rest of the picture?! ;)

I get a bit frustrated with aspect ratios. It's not so bad now, but when I first got a wide-screen TV I was always having to alter it so people didn't look like they had unfeasibly wide heaRAB.

I agree that the feelings generated by a new season of horror double bills probably wouldn't be the same - for us oldies who remember them the first time round.

But for today's kiRAB, they could generate a whole new interest in classic horror and monster movies. Imagine how it would be to discover a whole bunch of old horror films that you weren't even previously aware of! A lot of kiRAB wouldn't even care if a bunch of them were in black and white and it's not as if everyone can afford to go out and buy these movies on dvd. I certainly can't.

I think the BBC has a duty to it's viewers and license fee payers to preserve and make available classic old films, not just screening endless reruns of awful Hollywood remakes and generic bland films that can be found on all the other tv stations.

The Monster Club fits perfectly well within the anthology horror genre. Fully deserves it's 'cult' status (which usually means it has more enemies than frienRAB!) and has got some genuinely creepy moments in it. And Britt Ekland. The songs aren't anywhere near as bad as you think, especially 'The Stripper'.

Has anyone mentioned 'Tales that Witness Madness' yet? The 'search thread' box gets obscured by the bloody adverts!

This creeped me out when I first saw this.....haven't seen it in a longtime now!

I like it when the car beeps its horn after it has seen someone off..like it's really happy...lolol!!

I agree.

It's definitely one of Hammers best from the 70's especially as it was made well into their decline

It's a great combo of the atmosphere they had in the 60's films along with a bit more gore for the 70's.

Compared to other Hammers made in 1972 it's light years ahead

Edit - I was thinking of the disaster Dracula AD 1972 which must be near the bottom of the pile , but I forgot about another 1972 classic - Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter.
Slightly unusual for Hammer but one of my faves
