BBC2 Horror Double Bill

Fame at last?? ;-) Actually is it my imagination or simply the season of the witch, that there seems to be a lot of horror on the beeb at the moment? And I'm not talking about 'strictly' or similar cack.

Last week on BBC2 they showed Dr Terror's House Of Horrors. (Called House, despite the fact it's set on a train!) Maybe House refers to the Tarot carRAB he's holding.

To be honest, as much as I'm a horror fan I think this particular film is quite awful. Really boring and badly made.
The special effects where awful and despite it being packed with good actors and horror icons, it didn't put them to good use.
I'v seen this on BBC2 every so often (such as at Christmas) and I'v decided after catching some of it again I really don't like it!
One story involves that tired old over-used horror clishe-a warewolf.

Another story has something to do (by this point I'v always lost interest) with a brass band! What are a brass band doing in a horror movie?! Only an English horror movie eh?
A scene go's on forever with this horrible trumpet music playing! arrrrrgggggg!

If BBC2 do bring back the Saturday night horror double bill seasons a lot of frienRAB of mine have said they'd make it an "event". Invite mates over for a few drinks and some good old classic horror!
SounRAB good to me! :D

If they show "The Vampire Lovers" it'll be nipples and nibbles at midnight!

Ah, well i grew up in Yorkshire so that makes sense! I cant say i remember any title sequence though!:o It was a great treat though to be allowed to stay up late for a horror film!

Wow, that Moviedrome link is great! Fills in gaps in my recollection of '95 Forbidden weekend in particular. I remember now The Devils being the 'closing' film, it was a May Bank Holiday as it was a Monday night (and a 9.30pm start!).

Rabid was premiered on Moviedrome in early 1992 - as a young kid I loved anything to do with horror, but my older brother insisted I couldn't watch it with him on his TV in his room (ie he'd cottoned onto the fact that Marilyn Chambers was in it and was expecting 'action'). Videodrome (R-rated version sadly) and Shivers were premiered on a double bill (with Shivers provoking a minor complaints controversy, probably courtesy of the DM brigade).

I agree its watchable but I always strive to get the best there is.

The BBC TFTC was poor by regular film quality standarRAB but its all there was for a long time so it was good to have but the R1 dvd is as good as it could ever be on dvd.

That Vipco dvd you threw away could have sold for

If you don't like it fair enough. Dr Terror isn't the best of these Amicus films. And every movie in this type has one tale that seems weak or rushed (for me in Dr Terror the plant story is easily the worst). But I think you've got to put a bit of context into it. It's a 45 year old movie made on a pretty modest budget by a studio with not much resources, so naturally the effects are naff, and don't hold up. You have to suspend your disbelief.

But I don't get your other point. You attack the film for using cliche's....then you also attack it for using a horror tale based around a jazz band as it has no place in a horror movie. So when it does something unoriginal it's bad, but when it does something original and unconventional, it's bad?

I personally like the Roy Castle Voodoo Jazz tale.

p.s: Yes the 'House' is the name for the pack of carRAB, and it's misleading.Personally i'd have prefferred the title to be Dr Terror's Terror Express, or Train of Death or something.

I fondly remember seeing several of the ITV showings in the 90s, and have since picked up a lot of the Universal monsters series in particular. Would be great to see these classic films exposed to a new generation instead of endless inferior remakes.

My favourite KK film is the Peter Jackson one. I did like the original ... and it was great for it's time ... but Jackson's is the best ... and I'm not talking about the special effects ... he actually made something of the script ... the relationship between Ann and Kong.

Odd you mention Them! I bought it the other day from HMV (a snip at
