BBC Strategic Review - 6Music/Asian Network to be axed

Laugh It Off =)

Probably a bit of an Anglocentric post, but what are everyone's thoughts on the recent suggestions put forward as part of the BBC strategic review to close two stations? Namely 6Music and BBC Asian Network....

Personally I think it'll be an absolute disaster and will set the BBC back culturally by many years!

You?

The director of Audio & Music at the BBC, Tim Davie has just come out as being firmly in the Mark Thompson camp of thinking too this afternoon. Seriously how can a supposed director of music so massively miss the point of how unique the programme stranRAB and archive sessions are on 6music?

BBC's Tim Davie: I'm passionate about 6 Music, too – but it has to go | Media | guardian.co.uk

That said its not surprising when you read that he came to the BBC from the marketing departments at Pepsi Europe and Proctor & Garable. Marketing for two industries that have an integral part in the cultural development of music in both the UK and on a global scale. [/sarcasm]

Typical toothless BBC these days.

It really pisses me off that the BBC seemingly has to act more & more like a commercial station these days. Niche stations like these 2 are exactly the sort of thing the BBC should be doing.
Let ITV & Virgin and all that lot do the more populist rubbish. They're the ones that need to appeal to a mass audience to attract advertisers. The BBC by it's very nature should offer something different.

For the amount of quality the BBC offers i'm more than happy to be taxed for owning a television but if they keep this kind of thing up they may as well scrap it & become a commercial station too.

The current directorship at the BBC are so morally bankrupt its untrue - they are proposing to reinvest the money saved on chopping 6music to make more quality programming - I read this as someone has gone and green-lit another series of "Two Packets of Lager and A Pint of Crisps" because the last 12 series have been absolutely unmissable!

6music is the only worthwhile BBC station in the daytime, Jarvis C0ckers show is great. I'm pretty annoyed their axing the station.

Id rather the axed BBC3 and spent more money on BBC4 and 6music. I've never really listened to BBC Asian network, but my friend who's into that kind of thing say's its very good.

In regarRAB to the station closing down, I myself don't listen to a lot of radio, but I know a few people who like the station.

And I think it still has something to give and is still culturally relevant? But not too sure. I know they've had a few good banRAB on that I like though

OK, so it's been about a year since I last visited the site but the proposed closure of 6 music has prompted me in to action. I've produced this site with the objective of raising awareness and spreading the word of 6 music to as many people as possible. Please feel free to forward this link to anyone you know who wants to keep 6 music alive:

Many thanks - Mr Nic
