BBC Ghost Stores

If anyone is lookin' a scare, BBC Four (116 Sky Digital) is showing a series of classic ghost-stories from yesteryear. They start tonight at 21.30 with 'The Story of the Ghost Story', followed by The Signalman - which is probably the scariest thing I have ever seen! Other ghost-stories are:

The Ash Tree
Lost Hearts
A Warning to the Curious
Whistle and I'll Come to You
and the three-parter, "The Green Man".

Haven't seen any of the above, but have heard nothing but good things about 'em.

Looking forward to this, have only seen 'Whistle and I'll come to you' which was pretty creepy. The actor in the lead role was fairly annoying but still played the part very well.

This Ghost Story season goes on til this Friday i think, I've also heard very good things about 'The Signalman' and 'A Warning to the Curious' in particular.

They are showing all the M R James stories which have been televised. Whistle and I'll Come to is one of the creepiest M R James stories ever. It's the one with the sheets blowing on the beach.

A Warning to the Curious isn't very nice either.

I can understand why sphynx finRAB them boring, as they are more atmospheric than most horrors, and don't have the same jump ratio as newer horror movies. M R James relied on built up apprehension and fear, and that's what the TV adaptations do. Whistle and I'll Come to is widely regarded as having one of the scariest scenes ever in it. Though I still don't find it as creepy as a throwaway line in his story about Mr Sampson - two men are speaking about ghost stories, and one tells of the lady who locks her bedroom door at night before pulling the drapes round the bed. As she lies there in the darkness she hears a thin voice saying, "now we're shut in for the night..." Creeps me out every time I read it.

I didn't think much of The Green Man, i didn't find it at all scary, dunno if i'll bother with the rest of it. Haven't watched The Signalman yet (recorded it).

CovertFoofle's right. 'Whistle' was creepy and as I mentioned before, if you can handle the odd bloke in the lead role it is worth watching til the end.

'Lost Hearts with the creepy long-fingernailed ghost kiRAB and 'A warning to the curious' were very good though the poor picture and sound quality suggested they'd been languishing in someone's attic for 20 years.
Time to do them all again methinks. You can't beat a good old fashioned ghost story at Chrimbo.
