BBC announce new "Film 2010" presenter.

Except I don't think Mark Kemode is that visual. More accurately, I don't think he's visual at all.... Brilliant to listen to, though.

Further news on this subject: the Winklette has tweeted that it "won't just be me. will be with clever critics."

It sounRAB like they're radically changing the format.

Really

I'm not a fan of her and would have though there are many tv presenters/film reviewers out there that would fit in well with the show. Many have been discussed in other threaRAB.

To be honest I think it's about 2 or 3 series back when I last watched it and the last series it was just flicking in and out depending what was being reviewed. There are other review shows on that give you far better insight.

The BBC once again show their lack of competence. It would seem they are trying to appeal to the bra burners out there with the choice they made!.

Film 2010... crash and BURN!.

She has a degree in Art History apparently, and a Radio show that includes film reviews, and going by interviews she is a big film fan. So she is more than qualified to present a mainstream film programme on BBC1.

I'll wait and see the first episode before judging her and the series.

They are revamping it. Ross's format was just him, with occasional star interviews. I gather Claudia will be more about moderating comments from experts. I expect Kermode will be one of the experts, some weeks. As will the other critics that were suggested for the job.

Obviously we'll have to wait and see how it turns out, but on paper it's looking promising to me.

I don't think there was anyone who the BBC thought strong and suitable enough to keep the old format. Plus it was getting rather tired anyway. you could predict what Ross would think of films so easily that it was becoming less and less worth watching. the show needed to move on.

clearly Winkleman is not going to be sitting there a la Barry Norman but moderating a round-table film discussion. In that sense I think she's an ok choice. I like the sound of the new show to be honest. I can see a format of her plus two or three others (one critic, one actor or director, one writer etc) working quite well if they choose the right people. sort of like Newsnight Review but less pretentious:D

Isn't it amazing... she's had her culture program on radio for years and hardly a person has heard of it... she doesn't do the ditzy stuff on that. She's a safer bet than you think. I don't see how it's worse than a puerile Jonathan Ross reading the autocue, standing in for an intellectual.

You've obviously never heard it. Elizabeth Mahoney sums up her arts show pretty well here I think....

"Her limp line of questioning makes Front Row sound like the most punishing PhD viva by comparison."

What we really need is a new Barry Norman: someone who isn't young and superficial but isn't immersed in film theory either. Kermode and Mayo work as a team on the radio because Mayo deflates Kermode's more intellectual arguments whilst at the same time allowing Kermode to explain theoretical concepts in a way that wouldn't work on mainstream TV.

Barry Norman's strength was that he had a mainstream sensibility which meant he was interested in the same actors and films as his audience. Kermode is interested in a different kind of cinema which, as others have pointed out, produces great films but isn't the kind of cinema that the mainstream audience enjoys.

I honestly don't know who could do the job. Not Winkleman, not Kermode... my usual answer to any presenting job is Adam and Joe, but they're not right either.
