BB, TMo, and Iraq

Ok, I called TMo about this and they were suprisingly unhelpful regarding this subject. I think I confused the CSR I talked to, so here I go .. SLOWLY, and hope I can get a straight answer...lol.

B/F in Iraq. B/F 1sgt has a BB overseas and uses it to PIN his wife all the time (that's the assumption that they are PIN'ng).

My question is two-fold and goes like this..

IF I get him a BB (or send him mine and me get a new toy, lol) and add him to my current contract..

1. Do we have to pay for extra BB service or will my current BB plan work for both BB's?

2. Is there an international charge associated with this in any way shape or form, since he's in the Middle East region?

Any and all help/advice appreciated cuz this email thing while is nice to hear from him, he can't always be at his computer, but he can always carry his BB.. well, unless it gets blown up by an IED or something equally destructive..

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~you would have to have a data plan on both devices. I don't know about t mobile, but Cingular has an international days plan for $70 a month. If they don't have an international plan, there would most likely be roaming charges.
 
Yes, you will have to have two Blackberry Data Plans, One for each device.



Yes, I'm pretty sure you will need to have international Data Roaming activated and I believe there will be additional fees per Kbyte data while he's overseas. I don't know very much about TMOs plans, but I assume they are similar to Cingulars when it comes to international roaming. And I don't know if they have roaming agreements that cover BB Data in Iraq.




Good Luck, The other question is whether the 1st is using a government issued BB. I know some Senior NCOs are being issued BBs when their COs justify it because they want immediate contact.

When my son was overthere He would email me on my BB and I could usually get it in time to log into yahoo messenger and chat with him for a while.

I sell T-Mobile in my store, and we rent phones for international use. Here's what you need to do. if you send him your blackberry, you will need to keep your current $20.00 Blackberry Add-on plan, and add T-Mobile's $20 International Blackberry Roaming Plan. This will cover all international data charges, but not voice calls. (Voice calls are $2.99 per minute in Iraq) The only problem is, T-Mobile's website says there is no GPRS coverage in Iraq, which means the data services may not work. If you call and ask them you'll probably get 1,000 different answers. So you really wont know unless you try. Have your b/f ask around and see what other services people are using, and how much they pay. T-Mobile might not work, but Cingular might, or even another carrier from a different country might have an agreement to use data services in Iraq. But if T-Mobile works there, I'm sure that will be your cheapest option. You can't beat 40 bucks a month.
 
You could get a Family Plan and add him to your plan that way. Then do what everyone else has said and add the data plan to the new BB. As far as it working overseas, you're unfortunately on your own.

CMCC- that's exactly what we needed to know, I really appreciate you replying and breaking it down to simple terms one thing I did get out of all the chat with CSR's was that as long as the phone he uses is 900(MHz?) He can use it in the baghdad area, but it's hit or miss around the rest of the country.

And Jade, thank him for me also. I know somewhat of what you'll be going through, having had a son that spent two tours there. There will be times when it gets real rough, when you don't hear from him for a while. Have you been in contact with the FRG for his unit? PM me if you have any questions about this.

My soon (hopefully very soon since this is ongoing for a year now) to be ex is also military. So this is my 3rd year of waiting for a man who's serving his country in a war zone. My ex did a tour in Afghanistan (one of the first Army units in after 9/11) and was gone for 17 months, then when he came back to Hood, was home for 4 months on deployment readyness status, and went to Iraq for a year. He came home in March 2005 and we split 5 months later (on my birthday last year).

So anyway, this isn't really new to me, just harder since this is a newer relationship. But I'm sure I'll make it through, as I have all the other years. My Dad and I were both Marines, so we've seen the toll from both sides and probably have a better understanding than almost 90% of military families out there. Having all the support that I get from family and friends plus complete and total strangers makes every day that any service member serves our country a blessed one.

Thank your son for all of us down here in Texas for his service too
