This is one I would like to see an answer to just because it sounds so strange. If it was me I might try doing a complete OS wipe using jl_cmndr and then re-installing the OS again. However I have never dealt with this so maybe someone else who has can give you a better option.

Have you tried changing sim cards yet? Go to a corporate store and explain your problem and ask them if they can swap your sim card out for you. If that doesn't solve it, I would go back to your friend and see if they are on T-Mobile still. If they are, then check to see when they got the phone and if they bought it new. If they did, you might be able to get T-Mobile to do a warranty exchange on the unit. If not, I would start looking at the antenna in the lower section of the unit and see if it may have been damaged somehow. Dirt could also be causing the connection to be sporadic to the antenna itself between the board and antenna.

All of the above are based off the info you provided and assuming (which may be a mistake on my part) that the unit does not have internal liquid damage.

I haven't heard you mention any transition changes from going from EDGE or GPRS because that will make a difference too when it comes to using the regular data plan on the device.

Yup tried changing the sim card and no can't do an exchange and as for water damage all I can go by is that color changing thing and its completly white no red as for the edge and g question since unless I am connected to wifi and if I am not its just says searching for network the only thing that I ever see is the uma logo only me lol nobody at t mobile can even begin to explain it

If it says searching for network do you ever get voice at all. Sounds like from what you are stating that only the UMA option works that you don't get anything except that option at all.

Yup see u guys already understand more than anyone at t mobile the only time I can connect to the t mobile network is when I am connected to a wi fi other than that it just says searching I am running 4.5 and since I am new and still blackberry illiterate I am at a loss

You mentioned that you replaced your sim card have you tried another sim card from a friend that has T-mobile just to see what will happen? I'm beginning to think that you may have an hardware issue.

I would lean the same way towards a hardware issue.

A couple of minor things to check that you may have already looked at:
1. Check to see if "Mobile Network Preferred" is active in the mobile network menu under options.
2. Check to see if "Automatic" is active as well on the network selection mode under the same menu.
3. Run a network diagnostics after you have connected over UMA and see what the results are. You can start this by pressing the menu button while in the mobile network menu and selecting "Diagnostics", then pressing the menu button again to start a test.
