Battle Royale

Finally got round to watching this last night. Not as good as I'd expected, but watchable. It really was quite shallow, just an ultra violent action movie. The only real 'controversial' aspect to it was the children commiting the violence rather than adults. All the actual acts of violence have been done before in hundreRAB dozens of movies.

Glad I borrowed it rather than bought it!

I enjoyed it a lot - but probably for the wrong reasons: the violence was great in a mindless sort of way. The soul-searching/social commentary stuff was wasted on me, but then I'm not Japanese and facing a massive change in my society from the new attitudes of youth culture (or something).

BR 2 has been panned by the critics, but I'm looking forward to it anyway - ever the optimist.

Watched and enjoyed the first film a lot - as someone has already said, the real 'genius' is in the social commentary aspect so unless you understand the state of play (which you can slightly, although not to the same degree as the Japanese) then the overriding message is somewhat lost.

The second film is pretty chaotic - not surprising considering the original director died mid-way through. I reviewed it a few months back on my website - Thursday 22nd January, 2004 for those who are interested...

I thought this film was really good, and I'm not a fan of ulta-violent movies either. I thought it was actually taking the mic out of the violent movies, especially the scene of the teacher near the end, and the scene of the girls arguing in the lighthouse (I won't go into detail in case you haven't seen the film) those scenes made me laugh - maybe they shouuldn't have....

Although the film was violent, I did think it was quite thought provoking and definately worth a watch.

This was on TV the other night. I only recorded half of it, but I really enjoyed it. I think it reminded me of Arnie's The Running Man in terms of a "sick futurestic game".. Whilst it was really violent, it did make you think about what the future could really be like.

I have put an order in at Amazon.co.uk for the two disc DVD of BR. Good stuff.

I understand there is also an alternative ending which appears on one of the collector edition box sets, has anyone seen it and if so could they elaborate using a spoiler box. Thanks

Yep there is an alternative ending....

except its not *alternative*. Its more *extended*. As far as i recall nothing was edited out, just more things edited in. Extra basketball scenes, etc. I cant remember the full details but there is a BR website somewhere which tells you about them. I have to go to work now so i'll look later!

on the special edition they also digitally added more blood spraying around. Some have said that this weakens the film slightly, though I personally cannot comment as I only own the original version on DVD.

Nah, they did a pretty good job on the CGI blood i think so you dont really notice it that much. IIRC they have something in the extras showing before/after and yes it does look more graphic, but the blood usually looks real enough and behaves real enough so as nto to be distracting! I never noticed the CGI blood till i looked at the extras.

hahahah someone mentioned the krazy sickle bitch.. i found her hilarious! favourite part of the film was the lighthouse scene! my god!!

Watched this with my girl friend...we both found it quite romantic! Nice to see even non-hollywood films will stick some love story into an action film with such a high death count

I've seen Battle Royale 2 about 2 weeks ago, it was Japanease with English Subs. I really likes the 1st film but was slightly dissapointed by the 2nd. There was quite a bit more gore in it & i found that it was a bit boring at times, overall though if you liked the 1st film you should definately watch the 2nd!
