During the 90's, there were four prominent "groups" of childrens TV cartoons that most kids could discern between: The Disney cartoons (Disney Afternoon shows like Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears and Duck Tales), The WB cartoons (like Animaniacs and Batman: TAS), the Cartoon Network Cartoons ("Cartoon Cartoon's" Like Cow and Chicken and The Powerpuff Girls) and the Nickelodeon cartoons (like Cat-Dog and Ren and Stimpy). And my question is simply: which ones of these do you like best?
Here is my own list (starting with the one i like the least)
4 Nickelodeon. I was never a very big fan of Nickelodeon's original animated programming, even as a kid. Many of their shows, like Doug and Hey Arnold, have just always seemed a bit slow and dull to me. And im not fond of their usuall animation style either; it often looks kinda "gross" somehow with it's squigly lines (i am thinking for instance of shows such as Real Monsters, Rockos Modern Life and at least the earlier seasons of Rugrats).
3 Disney. The Disney cartoons of the 90's seem to have been more solely intended for children than many of their subversive contemporaries. There is hardly any hidden "adult humor" to be found in these shows, and most of the them aren't straight up comedies anyway, but rather mixtures of comedy and adventure. Light-heardted adventure that really isn't that exciting for most people over 12, that is. So yeah, even though i absolutely loved most of these shows as a kid, they mostly aren't that much of a blast to re.wtach as an adult (with the exception of Gargoyles of course, which sticks out as a 90's Disney cartoon that was indeed aimed at an adult audience). But despite this, most of these shows were well-plotted, well-acted, well-paced and very well animated. Overall, you can tell that there was a lot of genuine effort put into these childrens cartoons.
2 WB. Most WB cartoons of the 90's were throw-backs to the style and content of the golden age: that is, wacky, violent comedys with plenty of adult humor thrown in. And, well, i like most of these shows, and i really don't have much more to say about that.
1 Cartoon Network. Hands down. These cartoons are every bit entertaining to watch as a grown up as there were to watch as a kid. Especially Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls have among the best writing and direction of any cartoons ever. They just feel so fresh and fun, and also have a wonderfully slick and stylish look.
