Battery usage - is this normal?

I googled for battery usage of android/HTC Desire and noticed my "cell standby" and "phone idle" are exceptionally high: 39% and 38% respectively.

Side info: Freshly charged battery, unnecessary apps killed, 3G/bluetooth/wifi killed

the percentage used only makes sense when you also tell us how much of the battery power was used. 39% and 38% of 1% used isn't much. if the phone was on for an hour and the battery was 50% depleted with cell standby and phone idle using that much, then you have a problem.

That's not entirely true. Unless I misunderstand what you meant... The battery usage information always total 100%, whether you've used 1%, 10% or 99% of your battery. The percentages for each item listed are the percentages of the total used power since the phone was unplugged.

What you want to do is leave the phone as long as possible (either until the end of the day, or until it starts complaining that the battery is low), and then look at the statistics. If you're not doing much else on your phone (i.e. no calls, no WiFi, display off) then the next biggest users of power tend to be Cell standby, Android system, and Phone idle. Between those three they could easily make up 99% of your battery use.

all i meant is that the percentage used in the "battery usage" is a percentage of a percentage. so without the other percentage (the amount of battery power used) you can't really tell if something is wrong like the cell standby using a lot of power that it shouldn't be. if you do nothing with your phone, cell standby will be at a high percentage of "battery usage", but your total amount of battery power used should be relatively low. so a high percent of a low percent isn't much, and most likely not a problem. i think we're saying the same thing basically.

Well in that case, what you meant was exactly right, and yes we're saying the same thing... a percentage of a percentage. Sorry if I misunderstood.

The percentages do settle down pretty quick though. Even after just 5% of battery use mine seem to be very similar to 95%. I think you'd still have a very good idea what was using your battery. Sure, the best time is when the battery is just about to run out at the end of the day before you plug it in to charge.
