Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes)

Dunno who you guys prefer as Holmes.

But I loved Rathbone as Holmes in the late 30s early 40s, just fantastic, I wish some channel would show his Holmes movies in sequence.

The Rathbone Holmes movies were enjoyable, easy to follow and had a certain charm.

He also didn't engage in Kung Fu or whatever like Robert Downey, Jr.

Basil Rathbone was my favourite Holmes until Jeremy Brett came along, although I was never very keen on Rathbone's Holmes being used to help the War Effort (that eulogy to Canada he did at the end of one of the films was particularly cheesy). As a fan of the original stories, I think no actor has owned Holmes so brilliantly and completely as Brett, aided by John Hawkesworth's superb scripts.
Whedon247 - not sure if you've seen these but they are regularly repeated on ITV3. Give them a go, they are superb.
I can't bring myself to watch the new movie. I think Guy Ritchie is hopeless and I know I'll hate it.

Completely agree with every point you make here. The new film especially makes me weep for all that is Holmes... *complete Brett fangirl*

the basil rathbone holmes are brilliant

some of them are really creepy too

the one with the pearls hidden in pottery with the creeper was ace.

the pearl of death??

also one where someone wears a luminous suit and kills people with a garden fork which leaves claw like marks was good

Best Holmes ever: Peter Cushing

Runner up: Basil Rathbone

Honourable Mentions: Rupert Everett, Douglas Wilmer

Dishonourable Mentions: Robert Downey Jnr., Roger Moore, Matt Frewer, Richard Roxburgh.

The Scarlet Claw.

Easily the best of the Rathbone films.

I have the rathbone DVD set, and also 4 of the films in a colourised set.

Yes, I know, I was dead against the whole colourising thing, but these are actually very well done. The Woman in Green is brilliant, with the best Moriarty of the series.

"The Scarlet Claw" is also a favourite of mine.I also like "Sherlock Holmes and the House of Fear".In which every time someone is sent an Orange pip they are killed.

I must admit when i first saw the trailer for the film i wasn't impressed. However i overlooked this & went to see the film.I actually enjoyed it & i'm not a Guy Ritchie fan.

Nice 1,i hope you enjoy it :)

I do fairly like the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes, but the weak link to the whole thing is Nigel Bruce's Dr Watson, who just seems way too stupid/bumbling to be taken seriously. I far prefer the Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke's portrayal, which just seems more akin to the books and far more intelligently done, with Watson at least being a somewhat serious character. The relationship between Holmes and Watson is too lopsided with the Rathbone ones, where it is more complimentary in Brett's. Still, the Rathbone ones are well worth watching and they do have comic charm, too.

As for the latest Holmes, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but I didn't think it was that good, either.

Believe me, compared to the lead in the Asylum mockbuster "Sherlock Holmes" Mr Moore is perfect casting :D.

Not seen Roger's "...in New York" in a good while.
