"Universal Pictures has backed out of the big-budget remake of the 1968 psychedlic sci-fi classic "Barbarella" due to casting and/or budget conflicts reports The New York Observer.

Director Robert Rodriguez ("Sin City," "Desperado") apparently insisted on casting his new fianc

Rose McGowan? LOL

What crap casting, she is terrible in everything she does. Only one she was good in was Scream, she was murdered after ten minutes, bliss.

Plus, it was very much a film of it's time. All the satire and kitsch was based around 60's society and it's values and politics. It would make no sense in todays very different society.

Here, Here! Why is it they insist on screwing around with classic films like this, what next A Clockwork Orange with Drongo NeRAB/Chavs roaming the streets. Or maybe a remake of 1984, where they have the old contestants of Big Brother cast as the Proles.

There's an amazing amount of viewing through rose-coloured glasses going on here. Barbarella was inane tosh back then, and forty years of reflection hasn't improved it in any way. Jane Fonda was cute, is about the best you can say for it.

As for Rose McGowan, she did okay in Charmed and Planet Terror. Hardly Shakespeare either one, but then neither would be a remake of a Barbarella, fer cryin' out loud.

But, the times they are a-changing.

This terrorist thing is getting on peoples nerves, I would imagine a fluffy film like this would go down well.

Rose McGowan has no star aura at all though.

Scarlett Johansson on the other hand...

If it's inane tosh, then why remake it? Personally I'm not that bothered, if I thought it looked bad I simply wouldn't watch it. My point is more that there are some ideas- especially with remakes, that are so obviously unpopular and going to bomb that you wonder why they bother doing it in the first place

Maybe he thinks he can make something less toshy or inane? Then again, he does seem to like to revel in that sort of thing, so who knows, perhaps he likes it that way?
