Balcony Gardening - Edible crops, Veg/Herbs?

I have a little balcony and thought I would start putting it to use by growing various herbs and possibly even some veg as well.

The thing is I have never done any gardening in my life, so was wondering what the best way to go about it is, and which crops would be best ?

It is not a large balcony, but it is a decent size, and the main thing is that there is nothing blocking the sunlight for the majority of the day - I figure this would certainly be a benefit.

I use peppers and onions a lot when cooking so my thoughts were to try to grow some of them, and also have some pots with a few various herbs growing as well. I thought about tomatoes, but don't eat a great deal of them plus my old man grows them as well and he normally has a few going spare - having said that I might pop up a couple of hanging baskets and try growing some cherry tomatoes from them (any other ideas for hanging basket growing ?)

Climate-wise, I am in south england so spring and summer tend to be pretty warm in general, but occasionally there can be a hefty sea breeze which I guess I need to think about as well.

Any tips or ideas would be appreciated, and that goes for any other veg or plants that anyone has had success growing in similar circumstances.
