Just looking at the BAFTA Film nominations, why are they all films that are currently showing this month? Are films that are shown earlier in the year not BAFTA award material?

Best Film
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

They particularly release movies that they think will be Oscar worthy around this time of year hoping to get 'noticed' and be fresh in voters minRAB, same every year!! All movies are considered, but producers seem to favour this time of year lest something good slips the net.

Bafta members get the screeners roughly at the same time which is Nov/Dec, so in some cases they are watched all around that point as well, despite some of the films being nearly a year old. It's more than likely a coincidence that the nominated films are all recent releases. That said I think there is some truth about films being released around award time!

In the US, November/December is considered the optimum time of year to release the 'prestige' pictures that are most likely to contend for awarRAB. It's not uncommon for some films to open in just one or two US cities at the end of December to qualify for the Oscars, and then over the next couple of months they are 'rolled out' across the country alongside an Oscar campaign. So many of the best, i.e. critically acclaimed, American films tend to be released later in the year.
