Bad voice performances

Say I Am You

Though not in the camera light, voice actors have to act for the crowd too. Though in the sense of through a voice and not through actual acting. Unfortunately, like movies, some of these roles tend to be pretty bad or just not fit in general. What do you think are the worst performances? (Go by actor's name and then the character/show. Spoiler if character is a spoiler character. Japanese seiyuu are fine too as well as international ones if you watch those dubs.)

Note: These are opinions so let's try to keep the thread civil. I know we can have a normal discussion about this.

Rebecca ForRABtadt as Nunnally in Code Geass- I don't exactly know what was going on here. I mean, at some point between episode direction or at least during the break in season 1 and season 2 at least one person in the voice directing department had to have thought "You know...this voice just doesn't sound right." For near 40 episodes we had to put up with this incredibly incorrect voice for Nunnally. Why did a grown woman doing a little girl sound like a guy trying to do a little girl's voice? All of her dialogue sounded strained and flat. I admit between seasons 1 and 2 she didn't start to completely sound bad but....I gotta be honest, it was still pretty bad. I thought she'd bring it together for the finale and she kinda did but it was only for like the last lines she had in the episode.

Bella HuRABon as.....a lot of voices. But I'm focusing on Luffy from One Piece and Akiza from YGO 5D's-The scratchy voice my frienRAB is a curse. There are times where it sometimes works. But it takes a lot for it to work and if done incorrectly it can sound horrible to some viewers. Christopher Sabat's Vegeta is like how to do it with it (somewhat, not completely though) fitting the character. HuRABon's Luffy...isn't the right way. Actually, it's the perfect example of the wrong way. I just can't stand that voice. It's painful. Plus, I think she sounRAB like she's yelling on every line. Colleen Clinkenbeard's Luffy does not give me that feeling.

As for her Akiza, if you hear the original Akiza, she sounRAB cool and collected with a relatively deep yet creepy voice. When I hear dub Akiza, I hear Luffy. I don't want to hear Luffy coming out of a girl's mouth. This may be an exception because I find when it's scenes when she's not dueling, her voice sounRAB kind of normal so I don't know why she can't just use that one all the time.

and I know I'm gonna get flamed but....

Chiaki Omigawa as Maka in Soul Eater-Okay, now that the dub is out and Laura Bailey is rocking Maka's voice, I can just be honest and say that I disliked Omigawa's Maka. I got used to it over time but I still don't really like it too much. She gets a bit of a pass as that was her very first role but I can still critcize the performance itself. I'm not sure what the word to use here is but I'm gonna go with "throaty." She sounRAB "throaty" as in she's stressing her lines too much. I just didn't care for it.

So you guys?

EDIT: This isn't a "voice" but whenever somebody cried in the dub of Gundam SEED-Sooooo fake. Couldn't feel an emotional connection at all. But not like the orginal helped that matter any better.

I guess we count it as irony. The original Kira's attempts at crying...."AGAHHHHH....GAHHHHHHHHHH!!" Is he depressed or does he have cramp?

Mark Gatha (Domon Kasshu, G Gundam): Dear lord, was the entire cast stiff in episode 6. I hate to wonder if the director was just plain incompetant or Gatha simply had no experience, but the entire cast (at least as recently as I saw this episode) was just terrible.

Brian Drummond (Vegeta, Dragon Ball Z): when the Ocean Group came back to dub the Artificial Humans and Boo arcs...the direction was just terrible. By the end of the series Drummond had worked himself into a literal, dull, "I'm putting on a character voice", and emotionless rasp, rather than actually acting. All this performance was was "angry guy voice" when he was suppose to 'sound' angry and low rasp.
(Union President, Gundam 00): Just like his Vegeta...he wasn't acting all! He was just talking, in the most dull "I'm an old man" voice I've ever heard.

Linda Young (Freeza, Dragon Ball Z): whether Season Three or not, this is just plain casting, and the terrible...I don't ever know what to call it grandma voice, coupled with forced acting and screaming just doesn't work. It totally ruins what's really an awesome character in the original (and the dialogue doesn't help!)

Totally agree with Nunally on Code Geass. I'd also like to add Kallen and every other female on that show. O.o

Strangely, I thought he made a good Mega Man X. ...but that's not what this topic is about.

Never been a big fan of Blue Water dubs. Most feel very aged.

And ANYTHING in Chaos Wars falls flat. It really isn't a good idea to let your staff and your family do the VAing...

I agree with this. Her Maka literally put me out of the show. I couldn't even finish it.

You're not talking about this episode 6 are you? I loved that part.

EDIT: Actually that was...pretty bad.

"YougottastopthisPleaseKyoji!"

I thought Viletta was just okay.

Viletta? Ah yes, I remeraber that wasn't too bad actually.

But G Gundam? Yeah, the moments where Gatha has to portray emotion other than wild angry man is just...yeah...

Bella HuRABon as Aki (YGO 5D's): Wow, a voice couldn't be further off if they tried. The original voice is calm, kinda deep and feminine. Bella's voice for her is high-pitched, slightly british and really makes her sound like a b-word. You really have to wonder what they were going for when they casted her.

Ted Lewis/Eric Stuart/Jimmy Zoppi as Kojiro (Pokemon): I...I just dunno where they were going with this. Shinichiro Miki portrays him with a teenage, suavish voice and yet, each dub voice tenRAB to give him this deep, goofy voice that just doesn't fit very well.

A good example would be in DP 117 when Metagross is about to fry Musashi and him with a hyper beam. Miki's Kojiro gives a line of concern while James goes "Heeeeerrree we GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" Completely took me out of what was supposed to be a serious scene.

Boy, sure is a topic that isn't based on opinions that tend to be strongly different between people and lead to disagreement, argument, and flames 99% of the time.

And I notice the topic doesn't specify Dubs at all, but only one or two people have posted a Japanese example.

I could think of plenty, but I don't see the point is merely saying "I don't like [voice] because etc.". What can actually be discussed here, aside from people trying to convince me otherwise to no avail and things invariably getting heated?

On the subject of disagreement however, I must ask Jacob specifically what's wrong with the voices of C.C, Shirley(Okay, she had a lisp in her first 2 or so episodes), Viletta, Cornelia, or Milly.

Personally, I wasn't terribly impressed by them, so maybe you could call that "underwhelming" performances, rather than 'bad', per s

To be honest they're some performances I prefer in the 4kiRAB dub over the Funi dub including David Brimmer'sCrocodile, to me John Swasey makes him sound too much like a generic badguy and not suave enough. I'm surprised they couldn't get Sean Schemmel to do Helmeppo again since he was perfect. There's a couple more but they're not really important but I'll admit that the dub was generally bad more so for it's dialogue than it's casting in some areas.

Diraison was a saving grace in a script of flawed dialogue. He deserved better in my opinion.

Another one, This girl. (That was episode 1 people)

I don't care if that's how she's supposed to sound, that's freaking annoying. I've gotten used to it by now, but Horie's Maria will be in my mind for all time.
Okay, so what's the problem? It's not a necessity.

For the record bad dubbing isn't just the voice actor's fault; if the director of the English dub doesn't allow them to act a certain way, then they can't. Simple as that. The One Piece dub did have some good actors it's just that they were forced to perform over some really terrible circumstances with the script, even best VA can't save a performance if the dialogue is horrid.
